Non Hydroboost P/S pump part #

After un-packaging my LQ4 yesterday realized my motor came with a hydroboost power steering pump, whenever I search for a power steering pump for my motor (2002 Lq4) I can only find hydoboost pumps. Does anyone have a part number for an AC Delco power steering pump for my motor that doesn't have Hydroboost?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Non Hydroboost P/S pump part #

I am thinking out loud, but the difference is a second return fitting on the side of the can.
The one we put on the 46 I just placed a cap on the un used port.
Someone correct me but is the pressure the same for a non Hydoboost?
The steering R&P works great with just the right feel in the steering wheel with the H B pump

I was wondering that also, don't think there is any pressure on that line.

Un screw the cap on the fuel rail and depress the schreader valve, put a rag under it if there is any pressure that will relieve it, (also a fuel pressure test point)

I dont have a part number, but you can just cap it, but keep an eye on the cap because they dont always hold up too well, especially if they are exposed to petroleum products. Or just look up a pump for a truck with a 5.3, as they mostly used vacuum boosters. The pumps are the same, no difference in pressures.

Disregard, I was thinking FUEL pressure, not power steering!

One Pressure, two returns.

Whatever you do, don't go out of your way to NOT have it (double negative, but you get my drift). Part of the reason you find SOOOO many HB pumps is that the unit itself barely changed since the 80's, only the fittings and bracket. The only thing to really keep an eye on is whether or not the pump has the onboard resevior (some did, some did not). Either will fit, some guys like the remote-res versions if they have frame clearance issues....others prefer everything to be in one place.

Plus, there will come a time that you'll want HB...then you'll be asking us how to hook it up with the non-hb pump

Re: Non Hydroboost P/S pump part #

I had been thinking of going hydroboost, but didn't want to complicate my swap any more.
After the motor/trans swap, going to tackle suspension and brakes.
Any recommendations on a hydroboost unit? Besides the pump, hydroboost unit and hoses, is there anything else's I would need?

Re: Non Hydroboost P/S pump part #

The "unit" is a booster, just not a vacuum one. The most common passenger vehicle was the Astro Van, but they also come out of thousands of Chevy/GMC HD equipped trucks. 2500HD and up through 4500-5500 series medium duty trucks like Kodiaks.

Some have also found the Dodge HB units to work, but I don't like to taint my Chevy's with that junk hehe.

Pump, Unit, Hoses, COOLER, brake line. I'd suggest getting the master off of the vehicles that you source the unit from. The HB unit (booster) will connect to and work with any of the PS pumps. You also need the firewall bracket, unless you plan to make your own or I think Captain Fab made one also.

There is also a big discussion over this fluid orifice restrictor, and I haven't found a clear answer. Some folks feel that the LS p/s pumps are overboosted when run with h/b on these older style steering gears. Some feel that the orifice restrictor will fix that, some feel the adjustable ones ($$$) are the best fix....others don't even think it feels overboosted. Keep in mind, these were all mounted on vehicles with rack n pinion, unless your running an old style pump on the LS brackets.

From my experience, the swap is easy. Getting the lines etc run and made the way you want is the tough part (I ended up putting my own together in a more uncommon way). Running a cooler is ESSENTIAL, you'll feel how hot the PS fluid gets when run through HB.

The last thing is the tune; HB puts a large load onto the front acc, which needs to be considered when setting the idle window and a few other things in the tune. Its minor (and the truck can manage for the most part), but becomes important if you have other major mods. When coasting from hwy speeds, the load from HB can actually cause the engine to miss its idle and stall out....and losing steering and having limited braking at that time can be scary. Just let the tuner know you'll be running HB, and he should be able to make a couple minor changes to prevent this from happening. Its threat on low LSA high lift cams, boosted vehicles, or the larger displacements of non-stock bores/strokes.

Re: Non Hydroboost P/S pump part #

Thanks for the info on the idle update with H B
Another parts source is Hydrotech, for lines and fittings or complete units.
I located a 99 t0 2003 ford GT H B on flebay and I am trying to adapt it to the firewall of my new "project"
I am looking up Captain Fab for more info!

Re: Non Hydroboost P/S pump part #

What year is your truck? On my 86, I actually re-used the original 1986 pump, the snout had "METRIC" cast into it. I just swapped it into the newer can and was able to re-use all the new hardware, and used my 86 pressure valve fitting on the back. Just cap the extra return port and you'll be good.

Re: Non Hydroboost P/S pump part #

If you're working on a square body, which I am assuming you are by the avatar pic, then swapping to a hydroboost is super easy. I say that because hydroboost came on some of them, they're any truck with a 6.2 diesel. If you don't want to go junk yarding, you can most likely get everything you need from your local parts store or Rock Auto. Get a HB unit for say a '87 V30 1 ton truck, and get the lines to go with it, your lq4 will be close enough to the original spot for them to work with no problems. Again, assuming you're working on that Suburban, it looks new enough to have the o ring type fittings, so you will be good to go. Your current master cylinder should work too, so you wouldn't have to break any lines open. This could be like an hours worth of work.

Re: Non Hydroboost P/S pump part #

as BR3W says....you may want to keep it. I changed mine out from manual to a vacuum brake booster when I did my LSx swap and wish I had just gone HB with the build. Went from manual brakes to power boosted brakes with stainless brake hose and slotted/drilled disc upgrade during the build and even added a aluminum vacuum storage canister.....still have those occasional "pucker" moments so rather then going back to manual brakes, I'm switching to an HB booster...and swapping my p.s. pump back to what the motor came with...an HB compatible ps pump.
