62' backend issues

Got the bed off and shocks look wrong and rear axel looks wrong and not like a 62 because mounted funny. Can I swap out the back end with a later year on a 62.

That's a '64-up rear axle housing.
The '62 should have a longer panhard bar, attached to a bracket on the passenger-side axle tube.

And, as you can see, the mounting perches for that rear end don't rest on the trailing arms like they're supposed to--they're clearly inboard of the trailing arms.

Looks to me that the rear is out of a 63 or newer as the frame on newer is narrower hence the axle perch location, shock location looks fine ....move the axle perch's out to line up with arms and should be fine ..... NO idea what the box tube is all about that someone has added

Thanks that's what I was thinking, but is it worth paying to get rebuilt? I'm planning on having a 500hp+ motor and was thinking I should beef up the back end. Have people swapped the back end out like they do the front with later models or am I limited to only a 62' fitting. Just trying to figure out options.

With 500+ HP what are you planning for use with this truck? What trans are you going with? Lot's of things to consider here...

The stock '62 rear end is the drop-out center, or the rare-as-hen's-teeth Dana 44.
The drop-out center won't have posi, and the gear sets are pretty limited.
The Dana 44 is a great rear, and has everything readily available for it. But, you're gonna have a while hunting one before you find it.

I don't know much about the later rears, in terms of parts availability, posi units available, etc.

At some point, it might just be cheaper and easier to find a Mustang 8.8 or Ford 9-inch and go from there.

The '63 rear is that same style you have, but the panhard bar mount is in the middle of the axle tube, like the '60-'62.

If you went with a 9-inch, you could simply fab a bracket for a panhard bar, or find someone willing to cut one off a junk '60-63 rear and weld that one in place.

New perches are readily available.

You have a lot of options, and they're all pretty decent, really.

My 65 is on a 62 frame.
In my thread I swap the 1962 Ho32 out for a 12-Bolt like you have. You can see how I used Captainfab's perches to mount up the 12-Bolt.
Parts are more readily available for the 12-Bolt.

Looks like a lot of extra back yard work. The shocks moved, extra stuff on arms. The 12 is strong, build it right your fine. Check my link for my Porterbuilt rear change over.

That is a '65-'72 truck 12 bolt. As already said, you need to move the trailing arm mounts to the correct location to be completely on the trailing arms.

The shock mounts are stock for a '60-'62 and as such actually perform better in that configuration than the '63-'72 design. The only thing I might change is move the top mount forward a little to get the shock a little more vertical.

The durability of a given differential is directly related to the size and rubber compound of the tires mounted to it. The truck 12 bolt can be built to handle your proposed 500hp and likely 450-500ftlbs of torque. But that is going to require some good aftermarket parts and proper assembly that will lighten your wallet a bit.

Thanks I'm going to more then likely get it rebuilt to handle what might need. I would like 5 lug and right now there is 6 so I have to figure that out. I tried to find the brackets you sell for the backendbut couldn't find them. Any chance your coming out to CA so I could have you tell me exactly what I need to be doing..jk thanks for the help

So I am going to rebuild my backend and fix that mounts but was reading about ford 9" backends. Does anyone have any input on these and what it would take to put on my 62 or if its even worth it.

For the Ford 9" to fit does it have to come off a certain year and any special things I would need to look for before buying one. and if i buy mounts for it should that be the only fab that i would have to do?

You'll need to measure what you've got and then find one out of a truck that's the same width. They're still plentiful in junkyards.

One thing you'll have to deal with is the bolt circle. Ford has a different bolt circle than Chevy.
One fix for that is to send the axles to Moser and have them weld and redrill the axle flanges. It's very, very cheap, but you'll have money wrapped up in shipping. A local machine shop could probably set you up with the right bolt circle on the axle flanges too.

Then you just need to transfer the new holes to the brake drum face. I've done that on a few different vehicles. Not as big a deal as it sounds.

It is NOT a simple, direct bolt-in... but it is a very easy conversion if you're at all familiar with hot rodding.

Do you make shock mounts and does it matter where these are place on the rear. I only ask because Ive seen them placed on different spots on trucks.

No I do not make any shock brackets. The overall placement of the '60-'62 shocks is better for wheel/tire control. But as I said, I would move the upper mount a little forward to get the shock a little more vertical. Shocks perform better the closer to vertical they are.
