2 piece drive shaft

Does this drive shaft look correct? 1965 c10 , how does the carrier allow for the driveshaft movement? There is no slip yoke to the rear of the bearing.

Re: 2 piece drive shaft

That is the light duty 2 piece driveshaft that many have problems with. I always use the HD driveshaft and carrier bearing which does have a slip yoke behind the carrier bearing.

Re: 2 piece drive shaft

the support rubber should take up some of the slack as there is a slip yoke at the front. it may not be the best solution. that is a driveshaft from either a 3 speed or an a/trans. the 4 speed has a bolted connection at the rear of the trans and the slip yoke is at the centre support and on the rear shaft which would be a more preferable situation.

Re: 2 piece drive shaft

Not a great design that one in the picture because when loaded maybe it moves around in the rubber. Years ago (1974) myself and three buddies went to Mexico in a 64 Impala and that bearing went out. Some kid crawls under and comes out with the bearing. Someone else hops on the bus and overnights at a relative's in Guadalajara. He comes back the next day with a new one and the kid crawls back under to install it. The cost for everything? $40.

Re: 2 piece drive shaft

Thanks guys.. I had a nice experience a couple days ago with this, luckily I was able to hit the clutch at the exact time it came loose and there was no serious damage.

looks like that shaft has been worked on before. That may also be part of your problem

That is the problem.. I had the driveshaft done professionlly when I first put the truck together.. just recently as in three days ago I had a "guy" (who claims to be a fabricator) swap out my 6 lug rear to a 5 lug from a mid 90's truck. he said he had to shorten the drive shaft by an inch, the driveshaft came apart on the way home.
He claims it was the carrier bearing that caused the problem... I am leaning towards that wasn't the problem.

Re: 2 piece drive shaft

who put it all together? if it came apart on the way home then I think that the guy that put it together should perhaps look in the mirror, if he put it together then he must have known the condition of the carrier brg if there was a problem with it. things do not go haywire that fast. if the c/bearing had a problem then why didn't he fix it.
the pinion angle also looks to be a little high.
what caused the ujoint to come apart. are both the ends of the ujoint cross there; the one end still looks good. what happened to the end cap as it seems to be gone completely?
just questions that I would ask myself. there is always a cause and effect and we see the effect and someone has just done some work there .

Re: 2 piece drive shaft

NO WAY "claims it was the carrier bearing that caused the problem".... I would say the rear U-joint was NOT installed properly by the "fabricator" .... carrier bearing COULD NOT cause that and still be in the truck

Re: 2 piece drive shaft

I think it is a combination of issues. One being that the pinion angle could be wrong, just judging from appearance. Secondly, the weld around the yoke looks a little questionable. It may not have been done in a lathe or fixture as it should have been done to ensure straightness.

Re: 2 piece drive shaft

He has replaced the carrier and u joint, I'll pick it up this weekend.. and take it to a reputable drive live place to have a proper shaft with a yoke behind the carrier made.

HI CAP neither of those (weld or angle) would take a joint out that fast unless the angle was like 45' and the truck would be shaking like hell driving it

Re: 2 piece drive shaft

I drove the truck about 5-6 miles to the freeway, got on and got it up to 70-75 and it was smooth as glass.. no vibration whatsoever.
It was after I got off the freeway a couple miles down the road.. I went through the gears and was doing 40ish and felt a sudden vibration. As I pushed the clutch in is when the shaft came out.

Re: 2 piece drive shaft

I would say one of the bearing caps came off the trunnion that's when the vibration started and then in short order it came out... In your pic you can see it is missing (cap).... I cant see if the retainer tang is in the yoke or not
