Rear end
Hey fellas. I have a 64 that has a 6 lug rear end. I would like 5 lug. What's the best way to achieve this. Can I buy a 5 lug that will bolt right up with no mods. Thanks.

If your 12 bolt is an all original '64 12 bolt, you will need to also change the spider gears to install the aftermarket 5 lug conversion axles. The other option would be to have your orginal axles plugged and redrilled to 5 x 5, but I would only do that if the wheel/axle bearing surfaces are in excellent condition.

There are a couple of ways to go about getting aftermarket axles...one, is to work with a local differential shop where they would either cut you new axles, or order them from their supplier; two, is to work directly with an aftermarket axle company that makes new axles such as Mark Williams, Strange, Moser, Currie, etc.
For my street cars and hot rods, I usually work with a local differential shop.

I had mine re-drilled with 5 on 5 when I rebuilt the rear end. Cost was about $150 and had a racing machine shop do it...took a little time though but was worth it. Then buy the brake drums too. Also you will need to turn down the center of the axle at the plate to accommodate the drum.
