Radiator hoses
I need to replace my radiator so I figure I should replace the thermostat and hoses too.
My truck is a factory AC truck, but doesn't have a compressor installed. Should I get the AC hose or non-AC hose? Suggestions on brand for hoses/thermostat?

Re: Radiator hoses
Assuming the replacement radiator is identical to your current one, best bet is to take the existing hoses with you to make sure the ends on the new ones match up. In case a PO has installed parts from a different year/model of vehicle. Don't see a down side to getting the AC hose unless you have NO plans to add AC back. Might as well replace those heater hoses while you are at it.
No recommendations on brands. I usually try to avoid the cheapest thing on the list as there is often a 'name brand' that costs a few cents more. How old is your water pump? Much easier to replace now while the radiator is out of the way. |

Re: Radiator hoses
Fail Safe brand thermostats are supposed to fail in the open position, rather than the closed position. They cost about $20. I have read some reviews that this thermostat did not fail in the open position, but I put one in my BB 83 anyway.
For hoses, I would do some research on the internet. I think there may be some lifetime warranty hoses if you plan to keep the truck a long time. I would not go for the cheap hoses (like Dayco or Auto Zone store brand.) Cheap hoses are not very thick walled and tend to collapse a bit. I would check Rock Auto and see the variety of hoses they offer. On my luxury sedan (Cavalier) I used only AC Delco hoses because they have complicated fittings integral to the hoses and are not easy to replace due to limited engine bay open space. |

Re: Radiator hoses
Did a/c trucks get a different rad in '73? If they did and you have the original size rad, get the a/c hose as it is longer between the beds.

Re: Radiator hoses
I don't know, I just know that auto parts stores show different hoses. Is that just to get around the compressor or is it a radiator difference?

Re: Radiator hoses
make sure you either buy a lower hose with a spring, or buy a spring and put in it
