Where does this part go?

I shut my door yesterday only to have it bounce back at me while I hear something fall and clang around inside the door. I pulled out this. Any idea how to reattach it? Thanks!

I would say you need a need door latch. I think from the picture the top left side is the contact pad for the outside door handle. When you push the button in the rod hits that pad and release the hook mechanism to let the door open.
