Grill/Cattle Guard

There was a thread that was posted in as recent as a couple months ago I think that had some factory grill guards. There were examples of Chevy guards where the headlight opening was sized for one light ot GMC openings for dual headlights. I searched and could only find a recent one http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ht=grill+guard but it did not have the pics I was looking for.

The factory guards in that thread looked like they bolted to the top of the bumper, I have this grill guard below on my old 64 GMC and it is more like a push bar/grill guard. The support pieces bolt directly to the frame ends where the bumper bolts to. By the fading on the paint it looks like it was painted at the same time as the grill/bumper and I always thought it was factory or dealer installed item. I was thinking of putting it on my 64 C20 but the curve for the dual GMC headlights would probably look funny on a single light grill. What do you guys think?

A dealer installed accessory from 1964. The one in your picture looks like it could actually stop something. It's nicely made.

Thanks, I saw that one when I searched. I think I found where I saw the thread, not a recent one but one in the FAQ section.

The Chevrolet commercial guard is the one I saw that people were saying was a dealer item, in the thread I saw there were also pictures of guards that were the same except the openings on the ends were wider for GMC dual headlights. On the one I have, the curve on the top looks like it was made for the GMC dual headlights. That is one thing that made me think it was a dealer item, I don't know if there would have been enough demand for aftermarket GMC guards in the 60's

In your pic from the 63 dealer accessory catalog the guard has 5 equal spaced openings, the center 3 with cross bars. This pic is from murdoc in this thread http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=613858 has wider openings for the headlights and the 3 center sections are narrower. My thoughts were since there was a different version for GMC, that this one I have might also have been offered at a dealership. Also because where the paint is faded away from sun and age, the grill, bumper, grill guard and even the fender have the same shade of red primer showing through and it all looks aged the same. Wishful thinking I guess

Kinda like a 4x4 push bar but not quite as beefy. When I was your age I didn't like it that much but now I am wondering how it would look on my 64 Chevy.



I got that GMC with the grill guard from my mom when I was 17, that was in 1979. She had it for about 5 years if I remember right and never did anything to it but drive it 3 or 4 times a year to go camping out in the desert.

I chromed mine. They only came painted. The 63 Accessories book had artists renderings which were not always accurate.

Grill guard looks vary. Yours is very well made and quite handsome ...on a GMC, anyway. I don't think it would look quite right on your C20. IMO.

Thanks for confirming, I kinda thought the same. The 64 GMC that sports the grill guard was my second 60-66 truck so I now call it #2, the red 63 to the drivers side of the 64 is #3. Those are the only 1/2 tons I have had, the 64 C20 I drive now is #7. Getting #3 going again at some point would give me a place to mount the grill guard
