Upsidedown fuel pump??
Guys on all the video's of fuel pump replacement I've seen, the fuel and vent lines are on the underside. I've a 1986 Custom Deluxe and removed the fuel pump with the gas and vent line on the topside. Now I'm having issues holding the pushrod up, to get the pump lever under the pushrod. I've asked around and the consensus appears to be that I'm trying to install it upside down! Also there's no screw on the block to screw into to hold the pushrod up and the smog pump bracket hole is a blind hole so that's not it either. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks |

Re: Upsidedown fuel pump??
Upside down would be hard to do, use grease or the bolt in the front to hold the pushrod in the block while you put the pump on. also you may have to turn the engine to get the lobe up or you'll be in for a fight getting it in

Re: Upsidedown fuel pump??
If you can with one hand put a flat head in there and hold it up and with the other hand slip the pump in but dont get frustrated if you cant do it on the first try took me about 45 min when i swaped it out on my old 350

Re: Upsidedown fuel pump??
A hacksaw blade works well to hold the shaft up while installing pump. Like this picture I just found on google.

Re: Upsidedown fuel pump??
Thanks folks, But again the picture posted, shows what I see on the internet and the manual (the fuel inlet, outlet and vent on the underside), mine came off with these fittings on top. Also the hard fuel line comes straight out the top with no bend to bring it from the underside, so looks like OEM.
I can get the fuel pump in as you guys have described but now I'll have to go make a new fuel line. |

Re: Upsidedown fuel pump??
I can't say I've seen one like your describing..can you put up a picture of it? what kind of engine do you have? If you've already bought a new pump lay it beside your old one and take us a pic..

Re: Upsidedown fuel pump??
Update: Got it, Per SuperDav, I turned the engine a little and it gave me more play room to get the pump lever up and in. Though it's still in the "upside down position", its in as it came out. thanks folks!

Re: Upsidedown fuel pump??
Back up and give us a wider view of the engine. The bolts in front of the pump don't look to be in the right place. Wondering if someone put a different motor in there?

Re: Upsidedown fuel pump??
Was your truck a diesel at some point and someone has installed an oldsmobile engine in place of the diesel? I think old's fuel pumps are upside down looking and on passenger side.
Please post a pic of the engine as it sits in the engine bay.

Re: Upsidedown fuel pump??
I think monroe is onto sumpin...http://www.ebay.com/itm/FUEL-PUMP-CA...-/231655082935..listed as Cadillac, pontiac, olds, buick..if that's the case I'm not sure a chevy pump will work just from looking at the picture..

Re: Upsidedown fuel pump??
That's what I was getting at, and was thinking the same thing about the diesel. But the bolts for the pump you showed are top and bottom where his are side to side. I looked for a while at images and couldn't find the exact pump he has.

Re: Upsidedown fuel pump??
I wish the Chevy pumps had the fittings on the top. I know the Olds fuel pump ain't gonna work on a Chevy. I'll be happy when this mystery is figured out if we have another fuel pump option. I'm with Mrchevy4x4 that it doesn't look like a SBC because of the bolt holes in the front of the engine.

Re: Upsidedown fuel pump??
OK folks, thanks again for all the interest, to my knowledge the motor has not been changed, the vertical bolt holes your looking at on the front of the block are the smog pump bracket holes.
I installed the Airtex Fuel pump for a 4.3l Chevy C-10 with the pump lever in the up position and I should be able to fire her up today to see if I get fuel pumping. I'll keep you posted. Per the request for some pictures of the engine, here you go. Last edited by Bandit67; 07-29-2016 at 05:51 AM. Reason: tried to rotate pictures |

Re: Upsidedown fuel pump??
4.3....OK ...now were getting somewhere..I think we were all assuming you had a v8....as long as your new pump was identical to your old one you shouldn't have any issues..

Re: Upsidedown fuel pump??
I wish it was a V8, but sadly no, just the baby. It's my first break into classic Americana! Over here from Scotland and everyone around me has something in the garage to be working on, so decided
on the old adage...."when in Rome, do as the Romans do' and bought me a chevy truck! |
