Frame rails only

On long bed trucks 2 wheel and 4 wheel are the frame rails the same? Not talking about any of the cross members, just the rails. And tossing in 3/4 tons, are they also the same but heavier gauge? Or does the gauge get heavier with the one tons?

As far as burbs and panels go isn't there some sort of kick up (or down?) that makes those rails different from the trucks? Or maybe its just the cross member in the rear?

Basically I have several extra sets of whole frames now (nothing for sale or cutting up) in all of the configurations Ive mentioned. Trucks 2X and 4X, half and 3/4 and the same with burb/panels.

Re: Frame rails only

2wd & 4wd frame rails are different in the back. The 4wd frames are straight and the 2wd bow out to the sides over the rear axle.

1/2 & 3/4 ton frames are the same gauge, the 1 tons get much heavier.
Not familiar with burbs.

Re: Frame rails only

Oh interesting. I knew I had read somewhere a bow came in to the question, but I never realized the bow was outward like that. Was that because the majority of two wheels use coils?

Re: Frame rails only

2wd has a spot in frame for the park brake where the 4wd does not, its routed through a hanger. The spot on the 2wd has dent or hump there too, cant quit remember, making it different there as well.

Re: Frame rails only

Yes most 2wd were coils springs, some were leaf, GMC mostly but I still believe they also bowed out. I do believe the 1 ton frames were straight, making them easier to convert to 4wd.

Yes even the leaf spring frames bow out. The one tons are straight.

Re: Frame rails only

I've read on here and researched on my own that C10/C20 2wd frames are a different gauge. I was able to verify this on my 72 GMC 3/4t and my 72 Chevy 1/2t. The 3/4 ton frame is thicker. Nearly identical overal dimensions, just thicker. Can't remember the difference off the top of my head. 4wd frames are the same gauge for 1/2t and 3/4t. There's a post on here that list the gauge and dimensional differences between frames.
