Gen III vs gen IV

Help guys! I parted a 2006 silverado for builder parts, & I thought it was a gen IV engine. It is fly by wire, but the cam position sensor is at the rear of the block, like the 2000 engine in my 69. Plans are to have it bored 3mm, & build an iron LS1. I have not cracked the engine open yet, but my question .....is it a gen III, with 24 tooth crank reluctor wheel, or did they go 58 tooth on the wheel that yr? Longhorn

Re: Gen III vs gen IV

It could be? I have read some much on the subject, that my head is verloaded' One read was the fly by wire throttle body went 58 t on the crank wheel.....but that should have the cam sensor up front? It looks to be a gen III....guess I will have to get a good day & crack it open. Thanks for the reply, longhorn

Re: Gen III vs gen IV

06.5, depending if it released as a Silverado "classic" or not, the engine could end up in a truck the following year.

GenIII ends at 06 (meaning IN 06)
GenIV starts at 07 (meaning 07 model year)
Yes, there can be anamolies and overlaps.

24t reluctor makes it GenIII electronics.

Aren't the gen 3 crank pos sensors black and the gen 4 gray?

Re: Gen III vs gen IV

If it's from a 2006 Silverado, it's a GenIII. The Silverado Classic was made concurrently with the new body style trucks in 2007, GM does that for some weird reason, they did it with the Malibu too. DBW started across the board in the Silverado line in 2003, with the V8 trucks, V6's stayed cable operated. GenIII engines will have the black 24x crank sensor and the GenIV will have the gray 58x sensor.

Re: Gen III vs gen IV

you can also just pull the sensor and looky in the hole with a flashlight, if you don't want to pull the pan. 2 plates welded together with wide teeth = 24x
58x is a solid one piece plate

The 06 GTO are one that's a oddity...everything looks Gen IV externally (DBW, knock sensors, cam sensor) but the crank sensor is black and if you peek in there they all have 24x cranks.

The 06 GTO also has a 1year-only computer (and in general the GTO is a bag of rando parts), which is best to avoid.

The GENIII and GENIV use a slightly different internal architecture to their ECM systems. Basic things are the same (most simple sensors, DBW control is internal but functions the same), but the way the ECM's handle VE, PE, and things like trans controls are different. The 48t reluctor has a higher resolution (more teeth = more increments in one rotation= 4x more increments during a 4stroke power cycle).

Is it "better"? From an engineering standpoint, yes. From a useage standpoint, you'll probably never notice.

Re: Gen III vs gen IV

In my area, the 6.0 engines seem to command a high price, even with 200-250,000 miles...(IMO, that is just a builder)? I have parted 2 trucks, & have 2 "free" 5.3 engines, One running in my 69, & one as a builder (285,000 miles). I may check the boneyards, as the long block 6.0 should be cheaper than a complete pull out. As we know, bigger is better on cubes....& the larger bores will make em breathe deeper! Thanks again....Longhorn

I kinda like the E40 in my 06 gto.
flex fuel capability, easy to hook in. 24x reluctor...so would work with earlier engines out of trucks. Maybe you are right about avoiding it for swapping purposes...I'm not an expert on that but I do plan to get a project going here soon and will make a thread.

The E40 isn't compatible with a ton of other stuff that it SHOULD be compatible with. From a tuning standpoint, its reallly like an E38 pretending to be an E78.
