1963 semi float dana 60 rear axle

so came across this axle and have the chance to buy at a good deal...it came factory in a 63 gmc 1/2 ton...6lug dana 60 with 354 gears and powerlock....all break stuff is missing...from my researching i find that this axle is quite rare......the main reason i want it is cause the locker and gear ratio....anyo e have much experience with this axle?.......curious on how to find break parts for it......nobody seems to believe me when i tell them what it is...lol

Yes the semi floating Dana 60's in a 6 lug are quite rare. I do not know about the brake parts other than checking with your local auto parts stores. You will likely have to find someone is a parts store that is willing to put forth the effort to really look other that say it doesn't show anything on their computer. There are a couple forum members here with them, I just can't remember who they are at the moment.

Captain,
You think GM 12 bolt brakes and drums would fit? Comparing mine to this the backing plates look darn close.

Re: 1963 semi float dana 60 rear axle

Im going to guess , GMC dana 60 C10 and GMC dana 44 C10 brakes are the same because its all half ton. The key in all of this is getting a parts guy who you can TELL its a GMC to look up with old books. The other direction is look it up on Rock Auto website. If they share Chevrolet numbers to GMC, its wrong. This pretty much is GMC only as far as brake drums from past experience. Barry was telling me you can convert a Dana 60 from a C20 to a Dana C10 rear end by changing axles and backing plates from a 44. This is something Im going to try. I would start by ordering a brake drum. Theres another thread on here about GMC brake drums somewhere.

OK , update on above post. The 3/4 ton dana 60 needs some machining for the bearing to adapt to 1/2 ton but it can be done.

Re: 1963 semi float dana 60 rear axle

I have one. The brakes are the same as a GM12 bolt 6 lug.

To find drums, look up 4X4 stuff.

If you have the axels out, I would look hard at finding an HD brake back plate from a '78 to early '80s and build up the brakes from there. The axel is very HD compared to the GM12 bolt, so HD brakes would compliment that.
