CS130 Alt on a 1960 - wiring woes
I've read and reread a few posts on upgrading to a cs130 type alt on my 1960 k10, and have so far burned up 2 alts from my local pick a part. Before torching another I wanted to post pics of what I have and maybe someone can see something obvious I am doing wrong. This truck was running an alt with external reg converted years ago by someone else, and the light in the dash did work.
About a month ago the truck stopped charging, I also noticed the charge light isnt working (not sure if that was at the same time or not), so I thought it would be the best time to upgrade. I need to check the bulb to see if its burned out or why its not working, unless its obvious by looking at the pics here. I'm color blind so going by colors is tough...I usually have to have help locally. This alternator has been tested (3x) and is working, and is from a 1999 GMC Sonoma. It is a 100 amp. It has one wire coming from the connector, I'll need to verify which slot it is in. I have another alt from a 95 chevy k1500 (also a c130) but its single wire from the connector is in a different slot...which is very confusing. I do have a 4ga wire going from the output to the battery regardless which alt I have used. |

Re: CS130 Alt on a 1960 - wiring woes
BTW...this is the thread I've been using for the upgrade, but mine will not charge. I'm using a good volt meter wired direct and also a known good Fluke meter. Battery continues to drop and is now around 11.3 amps and will require me to charge it soon with my charger. Even touching the small wire to direct 12v the alts never engage (never wired to stay on for longer than 10 sec or so at a time)...I figured the alt would have engaged at least.

Re: CS130 Alt on a 1960 - wiring woes
PLIS connector, use the L for lamp and S for sense. P and I/F we don't use. On the Chev's the wire to the lamp is usually brown. That is what I hook to the L. I hook the old #12 red output wire to S and run a new heavier output wire like you did from the alternator to a junction (horn relay) and then on to the battery. Some say to use a resistor in the L wire to the lamp. Read up on that.
I put a CS130 on a car (not GM) and just removed the extra wires from the alternator to the external regulator. |

Re: CS130 Alt on a 1960 - wiring woes
That does not look like the CS130 alternators I am used to. Take a look on the Rockauto site for an alternator for an 89 Pontiac Safari. The pins are labeled PLIS, sometimes F instead of I. If you are getting an alternator you have to get the connector too.

Re: CS130 Alt on a 1960 - wiring woes
I picked up another alternator, this one is off of an 96 chevy k1500 with a 350, it does have the lettering and I have the plug for it too. So wiring this one with how its laid out would be how? It looks identical to the other alt tho...just has the letters

The 89 Pontiac Safari has an older type alt...isnt that a 10si or 12si? I thought the cs130's were the ones I have and the older types are the si's.

Re: CS130 Alt on a 1960 - wiring woes
The CS130's are becoming hard to find. Maybe next time I'll get one like you did.
If you are not sure what those wires are for in your first picture you could probably tape them up. Better that than hooking them up wrong. A wiring diagram could help you sort that out though. The simplest way of wiring that alternator is to put the S to the output post and the L to the lamp. I have seen it on GM cars that they wire the S directly to the output post. If it asks for a resister to the L I would put it in. 3W 75 ohm? |

Re: CS130 Alt on a 1960 - wiring woes
I picked up a 5 pack of these on ebay earlier in the week..for $8 shipped. Arrived on Sat and I wired one in on the small wire to an ignition 12v. Works like a champ....I will need to get a different pulley tho, a single belt doesnt quite cut it when it calls for power, it squeals a bit - lol.
