Ticking Sound after installing long tube headers and cutouts !! ?? :-(
Hy all
after a long time i did some modifications on my LS1 :-) I installed some ebay longtube headers and cutouts on my LS1 which is sitting in a 51 Chevy Pickup.... Before the longtubes ... i run the engine with the original headers. But all the air tubes have been removed already and the openings of the headers have been closed proberly. With the new longtube headers installed ... the engine sound so far is nice, but i can hear a ticking noise directly at the cutouts... The cutouts are sittting directly under the driver cab ....so with the cutouts closed i can hear the ticking noise quite clearly. What do u think ....is that kind of ticking noise normal ??? I know the cutouts are never 100 % tight closed....so maybe thats the reason why i know can hear the ticking !!! ??? Hope to get some idea from u Thanks a lot Achim |

Check for exhaust leaks yet?

Re: Ticking Sound after installing long tube headers and cutouts !! ?? :-(
Sometimes a ticking sound can be a coil arcing to ground....fire it up in the dark at night look around your module wires and mounts to see if that could be a problem.....I was hearing a ticking on mine 2 weeks ago couldnt find it at first...then one day before I left work i raised the hood and saw my MSD Streetfire arcing to its mount....at which I looked closer it was shooting from under the coil wire(Taylor wires).....when I got home I got my old set of GM Delco wires and saw that they had a longer insulated boot than the Taylor wire had on it.....I put the Delco wire on and the arc went away but would still arc every now and then. So I put on a new factory coil and set of wires and I had no more arcing.....i did notice a paint scratch on the MSD coil that exposed metal where you plug the wire on to the coil I was wondering was that where the arc was coming from on mine.......but the sound it made was just like a ticking sound..............good luck.........

Re: Ticking Sound after installing long tube headers and cutouts !! ?? :-(
I'd bet a dollar that eBay cutouts leak. For years it was near impossible to get a cutout that -didn't- leak until maybe the last 15 or so years, and I doubt that design has trickled down to the discount eBay market yet.
If they're not 100% closed, you'll have an annoying leak, so that's your issue.

The guys all have valid options, but allow me to pose another option:
When you switch to longtubes or any tubular manifold (non-cast), your also switching to a thinner material. This material will not absorb the ticks and echoes from combustion like a cast manifold does. You may just be hearing the exhaust valve events from the exhaust port.

Re: Ticking Sound after installing long tube headers and cutouts !! ?? :-(
hy all
and thanks a lot for ur feedback !!! as i already mentioned the engine does sound very healthy out of the engine bay.... I just can recognize / notice a ticking noise directly under my driver cab...there are sitting the cut outs... So first of all i am happy that this ticking noise is normal and its not a failure of the engine... just a leak issue of the exhaust.. I will give it a try and remove the flap and put a cover plate on the cut outs.....to check if the ticking noise will be reduced / eliminated. CU Achim |
