What did I do wrong???? Ahhhhh!!!!
On my 64 I did a pwr steering conversion using capt. fab's bracket kit. I didn't pay attention to the center link to frame clearance before
removing the old manual box. I have about 1/4 in clearance...after cleaning all the dirt of the frame and center link. It's gotta be too close. I can't believe I set the template too low to mark the holes for mounting the box......at least I don't think I did as i'm very very careful with stuff like this (at the dealership I work at, I do a lot of installs that require templates like spoilers etc.) My questions are: 1. Is the box sitting too low? 2. Can I just grind the back side of the center link slightly flat to increase clearance without making it unsafe? 3. Is the new pitman are up far enough? |

Re: What did I do wrong???? Ahhhhh!!!!
Your pitman arm looks fine. The splines have a taper to them, so it will only go up so far. As for clearance, it's not rubbing that's good. When you turn, the center link will move away from the crossmember as it moves on the arc of the pitman and idler arm. The center link looks parallel to the crossmember, which is what you need. As long as nothing is rubbing when you go full left to right, you're good.

looking at it, the center link is bent. Mine originally had this issue because someone tried to pull the truck from the center link. If you look at my used replacement, it's straight. I was looking at mine last night and it has about the same clearance that you show.
