Power steering

Hey guys I need help with power steering, will a 69 power steering box and pump work on my 66, will it bolt right on? Thanks appreciate uour help

Thank you sir, I'm going back for that power steering unit and I'll get the power booster and master cylinder too, may be it'll work with my truck

I have a V8 283, I picked up a power steering box and pump from a 1973 half ton someone beat me for the '69 one

Does your 283 have 3 holes on the end of the head to mount the pump bracket?

I used a power steering pump and bracket from a mid 70's van. It bolts onto the bottom of the block and the front stud of the exhaust manifold.

Thanks, Were you able to install it on your truck? I got the power steer unit off of a 350 engine.

I used the van brackets on my 56 pu a few years back had to mill the back side of the mounting bracket a little for correct pulley alignment with the short water pump set up . Used a two sheave lower crank pulley and an alternator bracket from a 67-72 pu. Got 70.000 miles on it now with no issues. I can post pics if anybody wants to see it.

If your 283 is all original, it will not have accessory holes in the head and will have a short water pump. That being the case, you will need a power steering pump, brackets and pulleys for a '72 and earlier truck or a '68 and earlier car. If you can not find originals (quite difficult these days) there are a few options in the after market.

The head is got 3 accessorie holes but Captainfab is right, the engine's got a short pump, I,m not sure if I'll be able to make it work. Thanks Captainfab I really appreciate your help thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Hey no problem if you have three accessory holes you can get almost any bracket to work and pick it up at almost any place

No the alternator is mounted to the left cyl head using 67-72 chevy pu alt brackets

Now my reply will take up some room but most of you will enjoy and some will Get it.There is one Bracket that works with all but one Chevy V8 engine witch is the 265 or the 260 .Never had one and never will.But all the rest from 1955--1995 this bracket works for power steering on all trucks.Ford dodge using the SM block chevy engine.This is the end all be all of easy brackets for the power steering pump.All others fall short.I've had all of them This one makes hoses easy to get to.This bracket let you adjust belt tension with ease.They are not cheep from 90.00 to 175.00 it will work on 283 up to the 400 small block.Now the pictures I have are from a 400 small block in a 1953 F100 and the 1965 3/4 ton with a 350.I have brackets that are for show only.Its just to show witch bracket you need.I do be leave this bracket works with headers.So here is your pic's.PS I have pulleys that show witch pulley is to be used with your power steering t6hey are single groves 1 deep one skinny skinny one goes on harmonic balancer then the skinny then the deep one grove that for alt and power steering.NO AC Both are on the driver side.Unless you have Headers then you find your own ALT brackets if you use Ram horns with the 2 screw in peaces on the manifold you can use the factory driver side bracket

This is the 1960--66 alt factory way how they installed the alt on these trucks with out AC.Most of you don't have AC But this is where you put your alt and the parts you need to make it work.Now i will show you a easier Bracket from the 1969-72 chevy trucks no need for the exhaust mounting bolt holes Again you running Hump heads you have to use the first bracket i showed you that uses the exhaust as a mounting point.If you use headers YOUR ON YOUR OWN.This is for stock only mounting using Ram horn exhaust for the4 1960-66 brackets But the 1969-72 you can use them brackets with headers.As long as your not running blank mounting holes heads if you are you Know the Drill.Next pic will show the 1969--72 brackets for alt

Now where on the 1969--72 chevy truck factory alt driver side mounting.OK they have 2 top alt mounting brackets for the 1969-72 the long one is for the trucks.the short one is for the Corvette the truck one has a longer throw more adjustment more belt.The SM throw is less belt tighter area both will work on your truck.The longer one has a small problem.Over time with us cranking down on them the longer one tends to brake less metal.Bracket could of been made a little thicker.Hope this sheds some light on most of your factory projects.Yes I've done this a lot.With in the last 8 years been taking pics of parts that most don't know that are on the market

One more helpful suggestion.Routing plug wires for all small blocks with factory exhaust Ram horns only.These are pics to show to help you clean up your motor area and longer Spark plug Life.Its how the factory did it..

OK there is one car that used a long enough 8mm HEI wires and still used the Ram horns thank God.

The 1973 or 1974 corvette with HEI ran there plug wires around the back side of the motor and ran the 2 front plugs 1-3 and 2-4 go throw the middle gap in the motor mount between the motor and the mount. Yes you have to take the boot off WD40 works the best be easy on your plug wires.Here is some pics to help you
