Anyone using Speed Engineering Headers???

In particular, these:

Name: speed_engineering_25-1021_2.jpg
Views: 3280
Size: 20.5 KB

Part number 25-1021

I am looking for feedback on how well they fit, how well they are made, etc. Also info on the long tube versions.
Thanks!

Re: Anyone using Speed Engineering Headers???

Wow, a reply already! Thanks for the quick reply. Any clearance issues with the spark plug wires or oil dipstick tube?

Re: Anyone using Speed Engineering Headers???

its not running yet, but the dipstick works fine. pass side wires are fine, driver side won't work. needs aftermarket wires.

Couple pictures of the long tubes and how they hang.

Let me know if you want any specific pictures of them and I can get them.

Whose motor mounts are you using?

Re: Anyone using Speed Engineering Headers???

Went with their longtubes and engine mount adapter plates, along with stock type mounts and the original I-6 perches. They fit well. The only modification was welding on a V-band to the collectors.

Looks nice. Your radiator and hoses look like the factory put them in, too.

Re: Anyone using Speed Engineering Headers???

Hey Sprint, couple of questions: 1. Can you post a "side view" version of the first couple of pics you posted? And 2. Do you see any clearance issues with the column shift linkage or spark plug wires?

Thanks!

Same question for Racecougar! (If you didn't re-locate your coils)

I used a '71 column and a Lokar shift linkage. The linkage required a slight bend, and the driverside O2 sensor bung is plugged (I installed a bung at a better angle in the exhaust just after the collector).

Re: Anyone using Speed Engineering Headers???

Thanks Racecougar! Two more questions: Is your engine in the "stock" location? and, I am loving those V-band clamps, did those come from Speed Engineering as well?

Thanks.

No problem.

Regarding location, it's a 5.3L LS in a truck that came with a 230ci I-6...it's a long way from stock. That said, the I-6 perches are installed in the rear set of holes on the frame, and the mounts are on the second set of holes from the front of the adapter plates. That is as far back as we could set the engine while maintaining at least some clearance between the valvecovers and stock firewall.

The V-band clamps are just 3" SS V-bands. I think I picked that set up from eBay or Amazon and welded them on.

Re: Anyone using Speed Engineering Headers???

I tried to use the Speed Engineering mid-length on my 68 C10 with an LS swap. They were great on the driver side and gave me plenty of clearance around the steering shaft to the power rack. On the passenger side they fit really close to the starter and bellhousing. So close that I decided to use the Gibson long tubes instead. Only have a pic of the driver side so sorry. Quality looked good, especially for the price. The gaskets they come with are cheap and I was not planning on using them. I have a No Limit Wide Ride IFS up front so engine position will differ somewhat from stock.

Re: Anyone using Speed Engineering Headers???

That is valuable information Meenaggie, even with the motor/tranny in a slightly different location with the No-Limit IFS, that doesn't change the fact that the exhaust is really close to the starter & bellhousing right? That would be the same no matter where the engine was, so that is a valid concern for me. Thanks!

Re: Anyone using Speed Engineering Headers???

Yes, you are correct. The clearance around the starter and bellhousing is independent of engine location and the suspension setup. Posts 61, 62 & 63 in the thread below show some more pictures of the Speed Engineering headers including the passenger side. Not my truck or thread but thought it would help.

Re: Anyone using Speed Engineering Headers???

Hi Steve Cole,
I have them on my swap but it's a 4x4. Not a single problem. Welds are great, came with everything needed to install and no leaks so far. I've had them on for about 6 months but only 500 miles. Never had long tubes on anything so no comparison there but the fit was great and no interference or tight spots on either side. Sorry about the pic, I can take some installed if it helps.
Roger

Re: Anyone using Speed Engineering Headers???

Thanks for the post Roger, and all that posted! Very valuable info here! Hey Roger, do you have a side view or installed view? I assume you are using the mid length but I can't tell from the pic.

Thanks to all!

Re: Anyone using Speed Engineering Headers???

I will take some new ones when I get home and post them. I'll take pics of both sides and show you the clearance.

Thanks Meanaggie, that is most helpful! This is the first time I have ever seen these particular headers installed and frankly, I am concerned about the starter/bellhousing clearance like you mentioned earlier. Aside from that, they look great. It seems that the long tubes don't have those clearance issues.

What billet column cover is that? I need something like that with my Unisteer rack and Ididit column setup

Steve Cole,
Here are a couple pics I promised. Won't clog up your thread but I did take enough to give you an idea. Please let me know if you need more.
