Windshield Gasket

Are Steele Rubber Products windshield gaskets worth the $112 compared to all the other repop suppliers asking $30? I guess I don't mind spending the extra is if REALLY is worth it.....

$60 for Precision windshield seal - https://www.prp.com/product/detail/1...ickup&type=All
$90 for Steele windshield seal - https://www.steelerubber.com/windshi...ket-70-1702-50
Having said that I haven't gotten that far yet.

Re: Windshield Gasket

I am very dissapointed with the fit of my Precision gasket which was professionlly installed last year. I am considering trying a Steele. Will be following you string, please update us with your experience.

Re: Windshield Gasket

i did mine a few years back, used the steele gasket with trim, i put it around the windshield and put the string in the grove , then taped the gasket to the glass to hold it in position for a few days so it would form to the windshield, i went to harbor freight and bought two of those glass suction cups, they work great for the amount of time your going to use them, spray plenty of soapy water on the gasket , that is what i used , have some one on the outside pushing in while you use the suction cups and pull on the string , only takes about an hour, use plenty of soapy water , hope this helps

Re: Windshield Gasket

I got mine from steel and it took the window guy forever to install it and the trim doesn't fit properly. I don't know if it is because it was from steel or if that trim is just hard to install.

Re: Windshield Gasket

Did your window guy know that the trim goes on the gasket before the window goes in?

I don't know I was not there. Mine is a 62 and that might make it more difficult.

Re: Windshield Gasket

Years ago we were restoring a 57 olds conv. first one from steel was too small the second one had a loop in it (we called it something else back then) they screwed up when they put the ends together. Window installer got one from his shop which fit. Best bet is get one and put it on your windshield and see if it fits. If not send it back.

Thumbs up Re: Windshield Gasket

It may surprise you to see how much the 'come to your shop guys' charge for parts and labor to install it. [And breakage is on their dime.] At least, that's the way it is around here, in Upstate SC. Hope you are pleasantly surprised!

Re: Windshield Gasket

Was reading a thread on window install and evidently silicone is a no no for the paint but guys have been using RuGlyde on the rubber before install to help with lubrication. Seems like a good product and inexpensive.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought silicon was bad for new painting projects, not cured paint.

Re: Windshield Gasket

Used several Precision gaskets on 60-66 trucks with glass cleaner and or soap and water and all went good. Probably 60-63 takes the longest at about an hour

This is always what we recommend. These are good lubricants that don't hurt your paint and will dissipate in a short amount of time which is what you want.

In this video we show you how to install this seal correctly. This was installed on Mike Losh's 65 (boosted bertha) that was in our booth at Sema in 2015.
