ID of My Grandfathers Chevy Farm Truck(48?)

[48 Chevy Question]

I put in the time on google and I believe my late grandfathers farm truck was a 1948 6400 Chevrolet.

I would appreciate if anyone could help to ID this truck. I know it's just the front side, but I would thankful.

emblem on the hood looks like a GMC, your guess for the year is correct, 1947-1950 had drop door handles, one piece side glass, and a drivers side vent in front of the door.

How do I narrow down the year?

the way to tell 48 from 49 is the model number is under the GMC emblem on the hood on 49-50. so your truck is definitely a 47 or 48 unless we just cant see the model number (but I think you would see it)

the way to tell 47 from 48 is the side gas tank, unfortunately on the other side of your picture.

what you are describing for the back window is what they call a "5 window" option, meaning two door windows and three rear windows. that option was available all years of the Advance Design trucks (47-55.1)

one other thing, if it was used for harvest, sometimes the old city records will list who sold what and what kind of truck they had. I know in kansas the grain trucks were sometimes listed by owner and year/make at the coop silos.

so they changed the emblem? or the hood? not impossible I guess, but the rest of the truck is 47-50 though.

plus with the highly accurate squint magnification I would swear there are only three letters on that emblem haha

no. not until 1949. 1947 and 1948 just said GMC. I actually said that same thing above, but for a way of explanation

I'm seeing most likely a 48 GMC with the side vent and no vent windows and no series number under the side emblem.

Great photo from a time when fruit was hauled to market in bushel baskets.

It looks like that emblem has four letters/numbers but I sure as heck couldn't say so in a court of law. LOL

This is the only photo you have of it? Another photo with it in the background or something may be of help.

well if the emblem has 4 letters numbers, someone switched the hood or emblems because the truck is a 47-50 (no wing windows, has side vent) and 47-48 chevy said THRIFTMASTER or LOADMASTER only, 49-50 said CHEVROLET with the number designation under and trailing, not until 51 did they have the number style Henry talks about (the underlined 4 digit number), 51 had wing windows and no side cowl vent.

for GMC there was 47-48 with underlined GMC only, followed by underlined GMC with the number under and trailing in 49 through 55.


my dad always said if you hear hoofbeats, dont think "zebra". is it possible someone switched the hood and/or badges? sure. is it likely? well, like a zebra in kansas, probably not.

the final clue that its a 47-48 GMC is also something someone could have easily switched, GMC heavy trucks for those two years got 6 hole cutout dually style wheels. chevrolet was a 5 hole cutout wheel. they interchanged, for sure, though

the thing that makes me lean to it actually being a 47 though is the badge LOOKS like unpolished pot metal. in 48 the emblems where chromed, but 47 only they were grey/cast.
