Another thumbs up for Red Head Steering Gears
Just got done putting in my the rebuilt manual steering box I had done by Red Head. Wow, when they say "zero play" that is exactly what they mean. I've never driven a manual box without any slop before. Rolling down the road, it's
comparable to driving a late model but without the power assist. This is a great alternative for those who don't want to convert to power. Last edited by AcampoDave; 12-01-2018 at 09:41 PM. |

Re: Another thumbs up for Red Head Steering Gears
Ya, when I got my truck, there was about 7 inches of play in the steering. I crawled under there and shook everything around, looked like all the play was in the steering box.
Got a good replacement in there and it was like night and day. One finger steering on the freeway. Manual steering still sucks in small, crowded parking lots, though.

Re: Another thumbs up for Red Head Steering Gears
thats good to hear.
i plan on getting my original box done by Redhead. I can't afford the redhead now, so temporarily i got a ebay cheapie, its a big improvement, but still has some slop. my original was so worn that it was like driving on ice.

Re: Another thumbs up for Red Head Steering Gears
When I went to power steering on my 66, I wasn't real happy with the play it had. I even lost some turning radius. So when I went to power steering on my 65 I went with redhead. No play and no loss in turning radius. Worth the money.

Re: Another thumbs up for Red Head Steering Gears
I 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Red Head steering gear recommendation. Worth every penny. Changed the front crossmember on my '66 C20 with a '79 3/4 ton crossmember and replaced every wear part on it. I put in 2 different rebuilt steering gear units, tried adjusting both of them the correct way and the quick, wrong way. Nothing worked to remove play and the last adjustment made it feel a little dangerous.
Fed up, I bit the bullet and ordered a Red Head steering gear box. Problem solved, feels tight and secure and fully safe for the first time in about 15,000 miles. |

Re: Another thumbs up for Red Head Steering Gears
Wow, I emailed them and then I called them. I must have talked to a melinial cause he was clueless. It was why I rebuilt my own box instead of buying theirs which is what I wanted to do with them.

Do they make a box if you have converted to Power steering?

Re: Another thumbs up for Red Head Steering Gears
If you have a year, make and model for it they can exchange yours, or if you prefer they will simply rebuild your exact box.

Re: Another thumbs up for Red Head Steering Gears
I emailed them yesterday with a picture and # off of my power steering box and they told me they had what I needed. I am going to send it to them since my truck isn't running, which will save me the core charge....even though I get it back, I would rather send mine in. Daniel was more than helpful and quick with email.
