48 Suburban Radio grill trim
My 48 suburban is missing the bottom trim piece which holds the radio grill on. I have the top trim piece which says CHEVROLET. Anyone know where I could find a replacement? I found several complete grills with BOTH trim pieces on Ebay for around $100, but all I need is the bottom trim piece.

Re: 48 Suburban Radio grill trim
Thank You...I am looking for advice and suggestions, and I thought that was the purpose of the forum.
I believe the dash is the same in the Suburban and the Pickup. Nice to know that there are other Suburban builds here. I'll see if I can master the search functions. If I don't hear what to do about the missing trim piece, I'll just make one. I bought this project in 1994, and have finally gotten all the lights, wipers, and ignition spaghetti straightened out. I'd include some pics, but after spending over an hour trying to access the forum last night, I'm burned out on navigating the site. I've been a member since 2014, but it kept telling me I needed to update my password, or that my user name was invalid, or that the code numbers I copied off the security screen were not correct. Finally I ignored the responses and decided just to read without posting...then I saw my "invalid" user name being welcomed at the top of the screen. Oh Well. |

Re: 48 Suburban Radio grill trim
I need one too.
There's a wrecking yard that specializes in old vehicles south of me called Desert Valley Auto Parts. I visited them the other day and they had a few and quoted me $45 for the bottom trim piece (I had one and turned the shop upside down looking for it, and at that price I wanted to look again to see if I could find it, but so far no luck) I talked to a guy named Brian. It is out in the middle of nowhere in Casa Grande, AZ and it looked like most of their sales were over the phone and shipped out freight or package delivery. Lots of Canadians for customers he said. Other than that, pick up a copy of Hemmings Motor News and look at their classifieds under 'truck and commercial vehicles parts' |

Re: 48 Suburban Radio grill trim
On the topic of posting pictures, you might find this helpful....
You don't have to use this site to host your pictures, any site will work. I find the one over on Classicparts.com especially easy to use, so I host my photos there. Here's their forums. https://talk.classicparts.com/forums/1947-1954.7/ Here's their media library https://talk.classicparts.com/media/ I use the photo editor that came with the computer (Paint, maybe?) to resize to 888 pixels, store them on my desktop then batch load them to Classicparts.com's media library. |

Re: 48 Suburban Radio grill trim
DrMr, or anyone, what does the trim piece look like? You all have me wondering if I have one now.
Eo1575, that salvage yard looks like a wonderland, especially for those of us from the rust belt. Thanks for sharing the pics. |

Re: 48 Suburban Radio grill trim
The part DrMr is talking about is the stainless trim under the radio speaker and ashtray - I think.
If you are interested in more pics of the junkyard you can find them in my build thread on classicparts.com..........bottom of page 13 https://talk.classicparts.com/thread....22045/page-13 I entertained myself for an afternoon there last week. They said they have 40 acres of car parts and it didn't look like anything was newer than mid-70s. I'd guess they had 15-20 AD trucks there. It's not a place where you're going to find stuff like you do for more recent cars at the pick-n-pull. Nothing that isn't metal really survives the desert heat. What they do have is a lot of nice original sheet metal with minimal rust. If you're looking for an instrument cluster, seats, radiators, bumpers, chrome trim, etc you're mostly out of luck because you're 30 years too late. If I needed a hood, fenders, doors etc I'd buy it from them in a heartbeat over the repop stuff. |

Re: 48 Suburban Radio grill trim
Yes, I need the trim piece with 3 studs in it that holds the bottom of the speaker grill onto the dash. I'll be painting it, so doesn't have to be perfect.

Re: 48 Suburban Radio grill trim
Thank you.
It's been a LONG haul...almost 30 years. Mostly it has just sat waiting for me to have time or money. Finally got everything working, and now I want to do a little more small stuff before I make it my everyday driver. It's somewhat ironic, now that it's almost done, I find myself wishing it was lifted and sitting on a modern 4x4 chasis with big tires. 30 years ago I thought I wanted a hot rod. Hope I can find the trim/guide pieces where the tailgate cables enter the body. I made one, and it works ok, but would be nice to have whatever was originally created there because the one I made is wearing away at the cable. I've never even seen a picture of the part. Perhaps someone here can show me what it looks like, or knows what to call it. |

Re: 48 Suburban Radio grill trim
Thank You.
I made something quite similar to that, but without the recessed part. How far in does the "tunnel" go? I can see why mine has begun deteriorating. The cable needs support as it approaches the actual hole to spread out the friction. |

Re: 48 Suburban Radio grill trim
I am guessing an inch and half. Can measure tomorrow if you need precise dimensions.

The cable guide in the center is one inch deep.
