Better Alternator
I'm sure your current alternator is a 65 + ampere SI Delcotron unit, internally regulated and nothing fancy just a very good, long lived, hard working and easy to repair at home item.....
If you're wanting some under the hood bling, go for it just don't be surprised when it fails in short order . You didn't say which 1984 Chevy light duty Silverado nor the engine so I chose the 1/2 ton and 350CID engine, lots of choices : One of our most popular parts w/o AC; 42 Amps; CAUTION: Pulley Change May Be Required (Only 1 Remaining) < Part image > $26.79 $0.00 $26.79 Add to Cart PURE ENERGY 7127103N {Click Info Button for Alternate/OEM Part Numbers} Info w/o Air Conditioning Part image $45.79 $0.00 $45.79 Add to Cart ACDELCO 3351094 {#88877304} Professional Info One of our most popular parts w/ AC; 78 Amps < Part image > $59.99 $0.00 $59.99 Add to Cart POWER SELECT 71273N {Click Info Button for Alternate/OEM Part Numbers} Info Std, w/o AC < Part image > $60.79 $0.00 $60.79 Add to Cart POWER SELECT 72943N {Click Info Button for Alternate/OEM Part Numbers} Info FitsOpt, w/AC OrStd, w/AC < Part image > $67.79 $0.00 $67.79 Add to Cart REMY 91757 {Click Info Button for Alternate/OEM Part Numbers} Premium; New; Remy Gold Info w/ AC; 78 Amps; CAUTION: Pulley Change May Be Required < Part image > $69.79 $0.00 $69.79 Add to Cart ACDELCO 3351093 {#88877303} Professional Info w/o AC; 42 Amps < Part image > $72.79 $0.00 $72.79 Add to Cart BOSCH AL530N Info for vehicles without air conditioner (Only 2 Remaining) < Part image > $82.79 $0.00 $82.79 Add to Cart POWER SELECT 7127SEN {#7127SE} Info Opt. Re: Better alternator?
If your truck is stock with no off road lights, or used regularly or you need a lot of 12 V power. Like to jump lots of vehicles, and or heavy winch use. There is no need to up the alternator.

Re: Better alternator?
If you don't have AC, the stock alternator is 42 amps.
If you do have AC, the stock alternator is 78 amps. You have a 12si alternator. You can find modified 12SI alternators that put out 100, 150, or even 200 amps. When looking at aftermarket alternators, there are 2 things to be away of - the belt type and the 'clock' There are V-belts and Serpentine belts. Not sure what you have or what year it changed. The clock refers to the position of the exciter and reference wire relative to the top bolt hole. The top bolt hole is the 12:00 position. Good info on the 10SI and 12SI alternators. http://www.madelectrical.com/electri...elcoremy.shtml This page does list what cars and part numbers to look for to find 94 amp alternators with the 3:00 and 9:00 clock. Another options is to convert to the CS144 alternator. I believe this does require a wiring change. These come stock at 124 or 140 amps.

Re: Better alternator?
Awesome thank you for the info, to answer some questions it's a 1984 Silverado 3/4 ton with the 350 and no a/c. It has dreams of daily driving with possibly up too 6 led off road lights. It will never have a sub but will have upgraded speakers. A second battery is also a possibility for down the road too. Not looking for "chip foose chrome and gold engraved carbon fiber alternator" but also not looking for rebuilt junk. How can I tell the difference between v-belt and serpentine?

Avoid a 1-wire alternator. A lot of aftermarket alts are 1 wire 'because they are simple' but the voltage regulation can be adversely impacted by volt loss in the wire from alt to junction box. Doesn't matter much when you are only drawing 20 amps but when everything is on, you might lose a volt or two in the supply wire from the alt. The standard 3 wire alt automatically handles any supply wire volt drop if the sense wire is ran to the junction box as well. A 78 amp is probably good for now. If you wind up with enough light power to cook the deer on the hoof, you can upgrade to a higher output alt at that time. |

Serpentine - Flat with ribs. Typically 1 belt for everything. Usually tensioned by a tensioner pulley. Since you don't have AC, I would go with the 78 amp alternator and call it a day. Almost double the amperage. Should bolt right up with the same wiring. I would be looking at the ACDELCO 3351094. This is a new alternator, so no core charge. According to RockAtuo prices, remanufactured alternators cost about the same as new. Prices can vary locally though. If you know what kind of lights you are going to use, or about what you are going to use, you can add up the wattage to see how many amps you need. Remember to add in factory lights - headlights, tail lights, side markers, and anything else electrical you may be running - radio, HVAC fan. This can give you a good estimate of how much power you will need at a given time.
