Best Way to hookup a 1 Wire Alternator ??
Just got a new 1 wire alternator. What is the best way to hook it up ?
Hook-up a direct wire from the battery terminal to the alternator ? or run a wire from the starter to the alternator. |

here are some links. When I did mine I had to buy a socket that you plug the original plug that goes into the old external regulator. The socket reroutes those for wires. mine was is a 62. I don't know what year yours is.

Re: Best Way to hookup a 1 Wire Alternator ??
I ran a 6 gauge cable from the alternator to the starter battery post. I have a 0 gauge cable running from the positive side of battery to the starter post.
In addition there is a 0 gauge cable from the negative battery post to ground. The alternator I used was from Summit and it has a separate ground post on the case - so I ran a 6 gauge cable to the ground. The wiring is similar to the pic labeled preferred wiring method. I haven't connected an amp meter yet, and still need to sort out the remaining under hood wiring. It is charging properly with these connections. |

What truck do you have? What is the alternator?
In converting the generator to a 12SI alternator in my 70 - Run the big lug on the alternator to the driver side junction block. Think I used ~10 gauge wire. Run the voltage sensing wire to the same junction block. Used like 18 gauge wire. Run the exciter wire to the brown wire that was going to the voltage regulator. Another issue - The top bolt is 10mm x 1.25 or 1.5. Needed a new bolt, and needed to grind the bracket a bit. If your alt is on the passenger's side, it is not unusual to run it to the starter.
