HELP !!!! '72 BBC Alternator Issue Mystery

OK, here is by dilemma (pulling my hair out) I am assembling my 402 to install in my '72 C-20 truck. I have the correct, GM original alternator brackets and I purchased the right alternator for my truck and when I put it all together the rear support rod that bolts to the exhaust manifold doesn't reach !

It's about 3/4" short - what am I doing wrong or missing ??? HELP !!!!!!

I thought of that as well but there are no open holes above the exhaust manifold that the rod could reach. I have looked at pictures but none I’ve been able to find are clear enough to see where it bolts to !

Maybe some one can post a clear picture of the whole assembly on the engine.

Post 11 here has a picture.

Think the head bolt hole is above and to the rear of the 2nd exhaust manifold bolt from the front.

Re: HELP !!!! '72 BBC Alternator Issue Mystery

Hi Randy, Thanks, I know it bolts to the back/behind part of the alternator. I have been able to confirm this looking at various pictures. It's the rod that bolts to the back of this bracket that is driving me crazy !

Randy, I have that picture saved but it doesn't help when it comes to where that rod connects to the engine - I really need to see where it bolts to on the engine.

Re: HELP !!!! '72 BBC Alternator Issue Mystery

I googled 72 truck 402 through the board, then went to images. Not too far down in the images. Not too computer savvy. Maybe you can find it this way.

Re: HELP !!!! '72 BBC Alternator Issue Mystery

Thanks Anew - You are right !!, I'm running an earlier set of heads that doesn't have this hole/boss on the head - MYSTERY SOLVED !!. Luckily I was rummaging through one of my cans of bolts and found a small bracket that I can bolt on the exhaust manifold that should work just fine to connect the rod at the right location and height. Thanks to all who contributed - no more hair pulling.

Hi Tom, no, now that I've solved the mystery I'm going to need it to put it together. I'm sure someone out here has a spare.
