Price of a 350
So what would one expect to pay for a rebuilt V8 350 small block from a mid 70's truck. I've looked at the engine and it looks like it has been rebuilt nicely. It's a private seller. For what I want (basically just to get my car running) I think it's fine, but he's asking about $700. It comes with intake manifold if I want it, water pump, and a slew of gaskets. The oil pump isn't new though. Anyway, I know the price is cheaper than getting a rebuilt 350 from an engine shop, especially since I'm taking out a 305 (the engine shop told me if I went from a 305 to a 350 I'd have to eat the core charge b/c they couldn't use my 305). Any info would be great.
Thanks, Kenneth |

it depends on the mileage of that motor i got a GM crate motor from a junkyard with 30K on it for $350 i think that as long as its a recent rebuild $500-700 is not out of line. If they didnt replace the opil pump id be kind of wary that it was a half -assed rebuild and wonder if the thing is really rebuilt or just regasketed.; id need proof receipts of parts etc. thre was a car dealer here that would clean motors exceptionally well, paint them in the car carefully and change the valve cover gaskets and claim it was a recently rebuilt motor yet all it was was shined up anytime ya deal like this its buyer beware

Right, a few other points I forgot. The engine has ZERO miles on it. This guy rebuilt it himself along with some professional machining for things he couldn't do (thanks the head's up on the receipts, I totally should have asked about those). The engine hasn't even been primed. It's sitting in his garage ready to go, not even in a car. He said he was also willing to help put it in and get it going. I have a hard time believing the engine isn't rebuilt and it isn't conspicuously clean. As far as the oil pump goes he said he took it apart and inspected it for wear and tear and couldn't see any, so that's why he didn't buy a new one.
Thanks for the info. Kenneth |

can't you get a new GM 350 with a 50K warranty for around $1200 or so? I would save ny nickels and dimes and go that way, but that's just me.

I have rebuilt/sold/ a number of engines and i agree with everything that Bob (old rustyc10) said. NO, unless there is proof that the bottom end is redone. An oil pump is only $29 ! even less from a kit. DAVE

Well... ask him the specs on it, what parts he put in it, if he seems legit then maybe you should take him up on his offer and have him help break it in/install it.

If you were to get a 350 built all you would really need is a 350 block you could use your 305 heads but you would be better off with some 882 or 993s or something similar,
Sounds like he is a back yard bubba Might Look around for something else alot of times people think they can build motors off the princeaple of monkey see monkey do but they dont know much about setting thrust or proper tourqueing methods little stuff that can cause an engine to fail prematurely Locally here i can get a longblock 350 built for about 700 with flat top hypereutetic pistons moly rings clevite bearins rv cam hv oil pump 3 angle valvejob z28 springs double timing chain all the good stuff so you might just shop around for a good engine builder Most of the time you can pick up a 350 core for little to nothing deping on people not knowin what they have or not careing anymore like if it started knockin or etc. Either way good luck with your project ., |

Why would the guy put all the money in the rebuild and not replace the oil pump that is the first thing on my list Dont know where you are located but you can buy a new crate 350 from Jim pace with 3 year 36 thousand mile warranty for $1250.00 depending on the year with no core
