Registering my 72 Nevada Jimmy in California
What a nightmare. I just got it registered after 4 trips to the DMV. Just a bunch of BS but I finally got through it. Worst of all is that it's smog exempt, yet they have all these rules and checks related to smog. My truck is about as bone stock as you can make it, yet I had a bunch of issues starting with how the title was filled out in Nevada (I had it registered in Nevada where I bought it and kept it to two years).
If anyone wants to register an out of state car pm me and I'll tell you the pitfalls and the things you need to pay extra attention to. Overall i get what they are doing but man, they are so pedantic and I'm just not convinced that this is serving the public any good... Rant off. But seriously, if you have an out of state car, there are a few things to pay attention to ahead of going to the the dmv. |

Re: Registering my 72 Nevada Jimmy in California
If it makes you feel any better, it took me over 1.5 years to get mine registered and titled. I bought it online from Texas, had it shipped to WV, it had a AZ title and I needed to register it in NC.
The nightmare should be over in about two weeks.

California DMV can be challenging!
Glad you got it done though! Hope I don't have any issues when I get ready to take mine off of the non-op role. Pat |

Re: Registering my 72 Nevada Jimmy in California
Bought a car from Oregon. The only thing to do is have the VIN verified for registration in Calif. Went to autoclub (never, ever go to DMV) Gal looked at the VIN tag on the door (Ford) and said "it looks good" and I was out the door with my calif plates. Easy peezy

Re: Registering my 72 Nevada Jimmy in California
Pat - I re-reg'd my Blazer last fall after non-op for 8 or 9 years. All I needed was proof of insurance. Also I have AAA so I just did it at my local AAA office instead of dealing with the DMV. Was very easy.

I too use AAA whenever possible. In fact, that's where I continued the non-ops after purchasing from the owner. Glad to see it shouldn't be a problem. Pat |

I used AAA, far better than DMV for sure.

Re: Registering my 72 Nevada Jimmy in California
bought mine in CA and kept it registered there as long as I could, even though it was here in TX. Finally went to get TX plates and they wanted me to pay taxes on something I've owned for 20 years. Then they wanted it retitled in TX. Used to be the title was only for changing ownership. Anyhoo, fought the taxes and got Classic Plates. Inspection is only $7.50!
