Advice needed on fuel line install on a 66 with new L31 Vortec
Im restoring my 66 and have purchased a crate L31 Vortec from Summit that will need an electric fuel pump. I bought this holley electric mighty mite fuel pump
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/HLY-12-427 I had another thread on the buying the engine and gotten alot of help making the purchase but I was looking for some help with how to install this right. Geezer#99 has given alot of tips on what to look out for in that thread including running a return line. Ive got a quadrajet carb Id like to reuse, I bought a new American Autowire wiring harness and havent installed it yet..this one. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/aww-500560 Also the cab is empty, been painted so far and thats it. So getting the fuel line into the cab where the tank will be may need attention first so I can position the line. I was going to put down some sound deadner and carpet and I dont know if all that should be done first before attempting this to get the right fit. Never done this before. I have been running new lines from the brake proportioning valve to the disc, drum set up I have so Im getting experience with the coil lines and flaring and such. The lines I have been running for brakes are the nickel copper type but I really am unsure if I can run the same line for fuel. Anyone know if steel or stainless steel is best to use with fuel vs nickel copper? Anyone been through this and have pics of how they ran what they did for the fuel line with an electric pump? Here is a pic of where I am now with the brake lines. I still havent finished the rear 1/4 inch line connection and run it down the passenger side. Still waiting on a few parts to finish that. The fuel and rear brake lines were originally clipped together and run down the same side. In the second pic I am holding the original fuel and brake line setup for that section under the cab for reference. |

I have run those little pumps in the past and they work better being gravity fed. Not a problem with a rear mounted tank but it may not be able to pull fuel from the behind the seat tank. They list it as self priming and I would put it as close as you can on the frame where the line comes down from the tank. Build a heat shield for it to shield it from exhaust heat.

Thanks Jimmy, the heat shield is a good tip!
I called Holley's tech line about the unit I bought and gave them the info on what I was needing to do with the L31 and quadrajet set up and I was told the following

What size line?
Finally got the engine installed, now I need to get the fuel lines sorted out. I am planning on getting cunifer (nickel/copper) and make the lines myself since there will not be any pre bent options for me on stainless steel because of the 66 never having the electric fuel pump. What size should I purchase? 3/8? Also has anyone who has done this swap have any pics of what they did to route to the carb?
