divorced np205 transfer case, pinion and u joint angles
My truck is a 64 k20. I have removed the eaton rear axle and swapped a 14 bolt, I have removed the front closed knuckle solid axle dana 44 for a open knuckle dana 44 and replaced the rockwell t221 for a divorced np205 from a international pickup mated to a 472 cad with turbo 400. Current angles are 8 deg pinion up , trans output 3 deg down, t case output 3 deg down.I also have installed springs and shackle flip on rear from 79 k20 and 6 inch lift springs from 72 k20. Other than the pinon at 8 deg up do I need to change any other angles, and if just the pinon should I drop it lower to compensate for axle wrap? Have the eaton axle sitting on frame to compensate for the weight of the bed that is buried in 3 feet of snow.

Re: divorced np205 transfer case, pinion and u joint angles
set your rear diff at 3deg up...with those spring packs you wont have much wrap

Re: divorced np205 transfer case, pinion and u joint angles
Thanks for the reply, I failed to mention that the rear springs are 56 inch from a 79 heavy half but the axle and front hangers are from the k20. Will that change your answer?

Re: divorced np205 transfer case, pinion and u joint angles
Pretty sure the t-case is level or tilted back slightly. I built an 89 GMC that I SAS'd using a Dodge 205, sat level, even with 14" of lift it didn't vibrate on the highway. The 40" boggers on the other hand lol....the rear should be pointed at the output of the t-case.

Re: divorced np205 transfer case, pinion and u joint angles
fyi divorced t-case all have 32 spline in/out for the yokes so if you dont like the yokes you have there super common to get replacements for .
and for the old cool factor and easy shifting i would twin stick that 205 . be real easy on the divorced case . then get a boot for a jeep with the old twin stick for a completed floor look .

Re: divorced np205 transfer case, pinion and u joint angles
The twin stick mod is on my back burner list. As far as the yokes it has all 1310 joint size. When I took out the t221 the rear output yoke was a 1350 style so I swapped slip yoke to match.I want to go to with 1350 style to replace it . Just wondering if I should do all 3 and if the chineseum ones hold up.

Re: divorced np205 transfer case, pinion and u joint angles
Guess I could search, but are 1410 yokes available too? I would want 1410 for the input and rear output. 1310 is fine for the front axle shaft.

Offroaddesign.com has some. But a search will find some too.

Re: divorced np205 transfer case, pinion and u joint angles
U-joint working angles and calculating them somewhat confused me a while back. Then I found someone that explained it in a way I understood. Attached a chicken scratch drawing of the way it make sense to me.
You can see I indicated the differential angle as down. Does not make sense right? pinion is pointing up. If you start at the t-case or transmission draw a line through all the components. You can see the line is angled down at all positions. If you start at the differential, it is angled up at all positions. You can do it either way. U-joint working angles are determined by adding or subtracting the two angles at the joint. Down/Down or Up/Up you subtract the two Up/Down or Down/Up you add the two A CV or cardan joint has two u-joints in it that cancel each other out so the working angle at u-joint on other end of shaft should be at 0 degrees. Probably +or - 1 degree as no working angle is not good as well. Also should add to avoid vibration an attempt to get working angles at both ends of shaft within 1-2 degrees is best. Maybe this info not asked for but hope it helps someone.

Just went through all this with angles myself. It's more than just the 2 being paralled - Watch the Tom Woods video about it all!

raylube, Do you have pics of the case mounted in your frame? I would like to see what you did. I am going to do the same thing with an internatioal case and mount, just looking for ideas.

Great job on the divorced mount! Would have liked to go that way myself, but the SWB kept me from doing it.

Looks good! Thanks for the pics. I thought it would work that way but have not pulled my t221 transfer case for a mockup yet.

Re: divorced np205 transfer case, pinion and u joint angles
Ray,
How are those front springs mounted? The stock front brackets and rear shackles? Modifications? I'm thinking of trying out those front springs, but in a 4 inch lift. Thanks
