66 c10 steering column
Hello everyone, ive never posted before but have been reading this forum for a long time. I currently have the front clip, engine and trans out of my 66. Have painted the front crossmember and suspension. And im getting ready to paint the firewall. Nothing fancy, just cleaning up the engine bay before the new engine goes in. I just pulled my steering column and am looking into rebuilding or replacing it. Does anyone have any experience with the cheaper columns on websites like Brothers trucks? What needs to be done to convert it to a 2 piece steering shaft? I am already doing a power steering conversion also. Or would rebuilding the stock column be easier? Havent found much info regarding that either. Thanks for any help.

Re: 66 c10 steering column
If you like your stock column, rebuild it. When you go to shorten the shaft for the power steering, you can also add a collapsible intermediate shaft from a squarebody or 67-72 c10. I'm not sure which years from the 67-72 truck though

Re: 66 c10 steering column
I took a collapsible shaft out of a 67 and put it in the 66 column. It fit right in, it was the same length. I'm not sure if a 68 will fit. The bearing configuration at the bottom of the column may be different. I am only going on what a guy at pick n pull told me, that I could use a shaft from a 67. I used a bushing at the bottom rather than the bearing and still used the spring as found on the 66 (and 67?).
I plan on removing it though and installing a column from a van so that I can remove the 4 sp and put in a TH400. |

Re: 66 c10 steering column
Thanks for the info. I may just get a tilt column and an intermediate shaft. Have to think about it a little more.

Re: 66 c10 steering column
I wrote up a 4 part DIY when I rebuilt my 1963 manual column. Automatic columns are not covered in my DIY. The 60-66 manual columns do have minor differences depending on the year. IIRC, the 64-66 manual columns are all the same.
