Ok, I guess my beater sat around for awhile or something...there is a ton of rust in the tank.

I get the luxury of changing fuel filters every couple of days...or if I drive across town (about 50 miles) I get to empty the filter before I finish the trip....

I can look in the neck of the tank and see rust on the sides ... I swear it looks like a bunch of barnacles on a pier.

I am sick of wearing this eu de unleaded cologne.

is there something I can do to break all this crap up?

keep changing filters from here to eternity?

or bite the bullet and change the tank? I have one in my 71 that is not rusty and will not be used in the new cab.

How daunting of a task is that anyway?

Spare yourself any more problems. Pull the tank, have it boiled out, then use one of the Eastwood tank sealing kits. Second option, probably the quickest, find a clean used tank and put it in.

either tak the tank or the whole truck to the radiator shop in town and ask them to boil it out that will get rid of the problem it will also show any pinhole leaks you may have or will get they can usually solder it up or of its too far gone then youll have to find a new tank

I second what ljbear said, use the one off your 71, it is really easy to swap it out, just pull your seat and take your time take everything off it.

To swap tank 2 - 3 hours. I would invest in a new rubber tank filler grommet if I were you. That way you can cut out the old one making the process of removal much easier.

Alright, I can replace the tank.

I noticed there are 2 different grommets.

67-70 and then 71-72

I will be putting a 71 tank in a 70 truck.

Should I get the 71 or the 70 grommet?

and will the tanks bolt up the same?

Tanks bolt in the same. get the grommet to match year of tank. The only other thing to note is that the 71 tank will have a provision for a vent tube that runs up between the pass side cab roof skins. Just plug them.

it was never a lack of skill involved with the tank swap.... it was lack of motivation

I noticed those vents the other day when I was contemplating this.

and I'm reserving the blazer tank setup for the 71

this is just my beater.

I pulled my tank and swapped sending units in about an hour so it's pretty east.Good Luck.The most aggravating part was getting the filler neck to come through the cab without tearing the paint or seal all to hell,then I just said hell with it and jerked it through!!!

jump to it is a simple swap out, and will probaly allow more than 50 mile trips on a filter. you may consider blowing out the lines to the pump and replacing the pump. lots of trash has gone through it obviously.

If I go ahead and swap the tank, can I install the grommet later?

I have a call in to one of the board vendors, I just don't know if I can get the grommet by the weekend.

I would hate to wait because this weekend is the only chance til the new year for me to get this done.

If you can put it off a little longer, you should go ahead and have your replacement tank cleaned and re-sealed. If it donesn't have any rust or leaks now, chances are it will some time in the near future. (It IS 33 years old)
I have used the POR15 tank kit and recomend it. The filler necks commonly leak where they are soldered to the tank.

You can get a grommet at GM dealer. They're better than aftermarket anyway. They are more supple and much easier to install.

I got the pleasure of re-painting the whole side of my cab on my 69 truck because of a ___________ aftermarket filler neck grommet. Those sum*****es are made out of concrete and they do not pop into place properly.

A week's worth of repainting and a new soft GM grommet and I was done.

I have strong feelings about cheap aftermarket rubbers (cough****from LMC****cough). Lifetime warranty don't help much in that case.
