292 block advice

Yesterday, I discovered that the flange on the outer edge of the grove that the rear main seal sits in has been cracked off for about 1 cm. SO the seal will still sit in there, but on one side the the flange that holds the seal from the outside has been chipped off. Is this fixable?

Background:
I have a 1963 shortbed stepside truck. I got a 292 off a guy that said it was in good condition, but it wasn't. I am already frustrated by not being able to drive my truck for a couple of years because of a worn out 230. I pulled the 292 apart to check on things and while it wasn't at all in the condition the guy said, I figured I could just take it to the machine shop and rebuild it, but now this.

Thanks

Re: 292 block advice

Here is the spot I am talking about. Sorry it took so long to post the picture. I have been busy at work and I had to pull the pan and crank to even be able to see it with the engine on the stand.

Re: 292 block advice

That’s sure an ugly chunk that’s missing.
If that’s the seal in the groove I see then it’s installed backwards.
The lip goes towards the front.

I would think a smear of sealer would be all you need on the oil seal.
I’d try that before scrapping the entire block.
