Question Overhead stereo

Okay, does anybody still make those universal overhead things that you could fit a stereo and a couple of speakers in? Did anyone here ever have one? It's getting about time to install a stereo, but I absolutely refuse to hack the dash. The USA-1 stuff is okay, but it's damned expensive. I don't want to hang anything below the dash if I can avoid it and I'm not too crazy about a glove box install since I'd like to actually use the stereo once in a while.

Anyone?

i had one years ago i bought at a speed shop and it was basically garbage. you could make one out of 1/8 plywood and some moulding and some scrap wood. it was justtwo sides and had to be trimmed anyway so might as well make the whole thing yourself

shuttermutt,

You can still buy stereos that will fit in the holes in the dash. They aren't top of the line, but they do fit into the dash. I found a panasonic at the salvage yard that I'm installing today. It seemed like the only stereos in this yard were the kind with the two knobs anyway. This place sells any stereo without cassette or CD for $10. $20 if it has the cassette or CD, and that's only if you can find one. They've been pretty much picked over.

Sweet! That' overhead console of theirs looks perfect. Much better than the big thing I've seen in JC Whitney. I think I'll give one of those a try. Yes, pics will follow when the time comes.

I think i've read that the one in the JC whitney catalog has been discontinued. (Are we talkin the same one as in the LMC??)
You could run a cheap 2 knob as said before, and run an EQ and small booster in the glove box to improve the sound, and get an FM modulator CD chainger under the seat.
