Need help with some redneck engineering
Finally got my '64 on the road after a few years and noticed some vibration when first moving forward. I knew exactly what it was and realized I'd forgotten to address it. One of the previous owners swapped in a different, I assume, 2-piece drive shaft and "engineered" a horrible mount for the carrier bearing support. See the pictures for this abomination. 🤦*♂️ If they would have used angle iron it may have worked, but the flat steel bar just flexes up and down.
I'm trying to work with what I got and was thinking of buying some wide angle iron, welding it to the frame, the drilling holes for the carrier bearing. Any other ideas? |

The best way to fix it would be to start over. Looks like the rear drive shaft is about a foot to long. The trick had a light duty carrier bearing in it at one time. You can see the remaining parts of the bracket. You have the HD bearing in it now. Post some pictures of the rear end of the drive shaft and the trans end (over all pictures of the drive shafts) and we may be able to get your problem worked out. Need to get the angles worked out and come up with a solution that will last.

I don't think that cross member is for a two piece shaft because the mounting holes aren't on the crossmember. Maybe last owner just used what they had readily available. Check out this thread.http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=630898
Maybe just scratch it all together and get a single drive line. Or, make a bracket to work like the original ones pictured in the thread. |

I would start over. I wouldn't want to risk a failure and possibly mess up the rear end and/or the transmission. Then you'll have even more of a problem.
