55.2-59 Rear crossmember

I have a side fill gas tank. Any reason I shouldn’t move the rear crossmember about 4 inches back to make room for it?

First, we have some unknowns here. What year ? What rear suspension - stock, 4 link, trailing arms with air bags etc etc. Are you thinking about moving the crossmember all the way back to the end of the frame rails?
on my '49 I thought about it, but since the frame rails taper - get wider as they go back - I think the cross member would be too short. but you could shim it. also the cross member would block the bumper mounting holes. that may not be an issue if you use a rolled pan. also, if you are using the stock rear springs, that cross member strengthens the frame so that the spring mounts dont flex. just some things to think about. good luck.

This is my concern. I did notice the that the rear crossmember tied in with the rear spring mount. I need to move it 4” towards the rear in order to get it to fit. Shouldn’t interfere with the bumper but that’s not a major concern. Worried more about it not being directly tied into the spring mounts anymore.

I'd start looking for a different tank. Ive got a side fill under the rear of the bed and didnt move the cross member. I think I got the tank from CPP but I may be wrong. its been a few years.

58 TRUK has the bigger rear tank, I moved the rear x-member to accommodate it. I boxed the frame and back of the frame to reinforce everything. It's only been 36,000 miles and 12 years with no problems.
