RMS 250 six?
I may have to do this on my 72. Have done several SBC 1 piece RMS....not a 2 piece let alone a 6 cyl
I assume the offset seal is preferred vs straight. FelPro # BS118291 Other than pulling DS, trans, clutch/FW....is that it? Link to a how to video?? Tricks and tips??? |

Re: RMS 250 six?
No need to remove any of the items you listed.. The SBC RMS you've replaced would be '87 and later. Prior years would be two piece design. You didn't mention the year of your engine, so I'm assuming it's of the years of interest on this forum ('67 - '72).. Those years have the RMS located in the rear main bearing area of the main cap and is a 2 piece design.. Raise the engine. Remove the pan, oil pump, and rear main cap. The upper half of the seal is located in the block immediately behind the main bearing and must be "rolled out".. The other half is in the main cap.. If you don't already have one, I suggest you obtain a Service Manual covering the year of your truck.. Seal replacement is well documented in the ENGINE section. The manual is available as a free download on the internet..

Re: RMS 250 six?
Thanks guys, yes as thread title said its a 72. Thanks for noteing the diffrence between v8 later year and this year, 72, inline 6 diffrence.
I will add the FelPro pan gasket to the parts lst The offset version of RMS the preferred one? it installs so the edges of the 2-piece seal do not line up with the main cap separation edge?? since the engine has to raise to remove pan, I will look close at MM as I suspect they are original |

Re: RMS 250 six?
I've never installed a rear main seal that didn't line up with the main caps. Maybe the tech has moved on. I haven't put in a rms in about 8 years.
To make it easier to install the seal, I would loosen all the main caps a turn so that there is room to roll the top half in without too much resistance.

Right now the leak is very minimal, few drops and nothing that affects oil level. Motor uses no oil otherwise. Currently just have a pan under truck and not always a drip, usually just after several hours of drive and then its only a few drops. My OCD though does not tolerate any leaks of any kind....but I may subside until or if it gets worse |

Re: RMS 250 six?
Showing my age here- On a rope type seal, you would cut short pieces and force them in on each side of the rear main in the block, and pack in all new rope on the cap. Trying to snake that old rope out and new rope in was a guarantee that the vehicle will be back. I did some of those in the '60s and '70s, but haven't seen anything like that since '84, when I graduated uni, left my mechanic job and went to work as an engineer.
