smog legal engine

since i live in the city, well kind of, and i have to be smog legal. the original 305 is still strong, but soon will be replaced with something that can move a bit faster. are there any smog legal crate engines that arn't ram jet? my ultimate goal would have a 6.0 out of a new truck, but i dont have the funding to do so. im working with a 4k or so budget. thanks for your replies!

I think any engine can be smog legal as long as you carry over your emissions equipment.

Not exactly. I asked a GM rep about the Fast Burn 385 going in a 95 Yukon. He said even with a hi-flow TBI and a true dual exhaust with dual hi-flow cats it wouldn't work. He said that it wouldn't run right, and it owuldn't pass an emission test if it did.

Most of the "replacement" motors are designed to up the hp/tq and still fall within smog test guidlines.

Guess I was wrong. Mine does not have the first piece of emissions equipment on it. And I have to get it inspected in March. Hope I can get by.

Its all relative. That motor is not and will never be a TBI motor. TBI sucks for performance, which is why it wouldn't work. My 415hp 383 stroker passed emissions. As long as all the equipment is hooked up, and the crap coming out the tailpipes is below the limit, your in. This basiclly means don't go too big with the cam.

Side note: my almost stock vortec 350 in my 79 requires cat convertors. Well, mine burnt out, and it did better emissions wise with them broke then with them intact. Emissions is really just a joke the government plays on us.

The rules vary by where your at. You can be 100% sure that if you stay with something that originally came in the rig (ie a 305, 350, 454) for that specific year and you move all the emissions stuff over then your good. If you go with something else that is externally the same but internally different, 383 stroker, then just make sure u have it tuned correctly and the correct smog equipment. General rule of thumb is emissions must meet either the engine or the chassis, which ever is newer. But again, the rules vary can vary by county and not just state. Some places here in PA require no emissions testing, only safety. But places I've lived in California are extremely strict and you may even need to enlist the services of an Emissions Judge to review your reciepts and parts documentation to give you a waiver.

I think that if you were to change it out with a later model engine, ie 1985- on, and you transfer all of the emission equipment you should be ok. That's how it is in Louisiana.

As long as the equipment is on the engine/truck that came on it stock, and it passes the sniffer, it's legal. Maybe not in Cali, since they are so damned strict. I've also heard you can upgrade engines from a later model truck and use the same equipment that came on this truck and it's still legal. But you can't go back in years to older emissions equipment.

Gary,

you have the same engine as I do and the same cam. If all the equpment is hooked up, it will pass easily. I do anyways.

9.3:1 CR, AFR 180s, XE262, Performer EGR, 600 Edelbrock... Something like this should have great power and shouldn't upset the sniffer.

I have nothing....no air pump, egr, or even cats. They aren't too strict down here. When I got it inspected last year, they opened the hood and looked and closed it and did not say a word. Then it still had the V6 in it with the cat but it did not have the egr or air pump. I don't think I will have a problem though.
