Re: 1966 c20 no title

David
There is a lot of variables.

Most of it depends on State (Laws) / Rules.

Did you already buy the truck?

Did you get a bill of sale?

Is the owner of the truck still living?

How long has it been (Not Registered)?

Did you buy the truck out of state?

Sounds like you would need to talk to the Local DMV.

This would be a parts truck if you cannot get a title.

It is better to know your plan and options going forward.

First thing to do is get the VIN and take it to the State Police and they'll tell you if its stolen. Could be a game changer.

That is IF it is in the system. I bought my 67 C10 and it was out of the system. 1992 title, Arizona only keeps them 10-15 years if not registered/ insured.

MY PO passed away in 2011 in Virginia, had to go Bonded Title.

Before going to the State Police, go to the National Insurance Crime Bureau and type it in there, https://www.nicb.org/vincheck At least you won't have to go anywhere to start off with. However, as Mountaineer suggests, you should still go to your local PD, if they will help you, or the State to see if they will run the VIN for you.

Re: 1966 c20 no title

If it is priced right, I would buy it also.

Keeping in mind that it may become a parts truck if a title cannot be acquired.

We are just trying to help and suggest from our past experience of these issues.

I have made it a Point over the years to put a tag and Title on a Vehicle before any money gets spent.

I don't know how strict the title laws are in your state.

If it is stolen it could be removed from your possession.
Along with all the money you spent on it.

These are all great suggestions others have given about the Vin and all that stuff.

Good luck with this purchase.

What are your plans for the truck?

Re: 1966 c20 no title

I don't know how many times I inquired about a car or truck on marketplace that didn't say in the description if title was in hand and the seller getting annoyed at my lack of enthusiasm when they in fact didn't have the title. They always say it's simple to get a title and then send a husky paragraph on how to do it and my reply is, buyers don't want more hoops to jump through and if it's soo easy then why haven't you done it? That usually ends things

Re: 1966 c20 no title

No title doesn't make it a parts truck, if you have a VIN and can verify it's not stolen then you have options.

There a lot of companies that offer title services that can handle it albeit for a price (~$300). Many states will register the truck on only a bill of sale after a vin verification completed by your local police. If the truck is registered in a non-title state then that registration acts as proof of ownership. That truck can now be transferred to a state that requires titles and you will be issued one.

Is this truck worth that process is up to you but it absolutely can be done if you require a title.

That is what happened with my '64. A very nice and knowledgeable lady at the Ga. DMV was terrific through the process. Took about 4 months thanks to the Ohio DMV, should have been about half of that.

That is a good point, depending on who you are dealing with at your DMV it can impact the process too. Georgia is a bit different being a bill of sale state for classics, we have registrations but also title for a few scenarios along with conditional titles for pre-63 vehicles.

I have experienced some very knowledgeable and helpful employees but have also needed to explain the laws to quite a few on classics because the process is not a common routine. Most of those times a manager will be called over to verify everything but on occasion I have had a couple become headstrong and refute what is actually legal or required. When that occurs you just have to walk away and come back another day then hope you get someone different to deal with. My advice is to learn your state's specific laws for what is needed to get your truck on the road and you will find a way. Even a missing VIN is not the end of the road, there is a process for those too .

BTW - glad to see fellow Mountaineer on the site, let's go!

Re: 1966 c20 no title

I bought a truck with an out of state bill of sale, I’m in Florida. I went with a private company to have a title issued and had it in about a month. I think the new title came from Vermont then I just transferred it to Florida when I received it. Florida came and inspected the vin plate, etc.. But it’s not cheap to do it this way.

I think I read Vermont closed this loophole.
