Converting to Mini Starter

Ok guys, I have my old starter off and ready to install the new mini starter.....now I have a problem. The old starter had the cable from the battery, one small wire to the "S" and one small wire to the "R". The new mini starter has only one place to connect the smaller wires and it isn't marked. I have an HEI dist.

Any ideas???...

I don't think you need the R wire anymore. I believe it was used to supply a full 12 volts to the points style distributor while cranking, bypassing the resistor wire to aid in starting.

Just trace the wire back to be sure. I bet you will find it isn't connected to anything anymore being you installed a new HEI distributor and most likely ran a new 12 guage ignition wire to it.

Repo is right. That wire is simply a bypass around the resistance wire used when starting with the old points style distributor. You don't need it with your HEI setup.

Thanks for the replies. I left off the "R" wire and then fought the dang mini starter trying to get the bolts to line up...30 minutes later I discovered tht I could rotate the starter on the mounting head. Its all good now. I also rebuilt my holley 4 bbl last night...never tore into one. It went pretty well...now if I can get the mixture adjusted right I will be in business.
