10 bolt=dana 44?
Rookie question, I know, but is there a difference between a Dana 44 and a 10 bolt front axle and it so, what years did they put each one in the beloved chevy pickemuptruck?

the dana 44 was made by spicer gear and sold to various automakers in large lots...the 10 bolt was made by GM to replace the dana 44, most likely a cost cutting move. the 10 bolt is slightly weaker than the dana 44, and more gear ratios/traction aides are available for the 44.
from what i've heard, dana 44 only were used in all 1/2 and 3/4 ton GM 4x4 trucks up until 77. from 77-79, both the d44 and the 10 bolt were used, and 80-91 the 10 bolt only was used. in the photo album link in my profile, there is an album named "Axles" it has pictures of both to show the differences.

Like adam said. Easiest way to tell are the little ears that stick off of the 10 bolt down at the bottom of the center section on each side. I also believe that GMC's might have come with front 44s into the 80s.

Their both about as strong, but the only outside difference is the shape of the hogs head. 10 bolt is round and D44 has an apple like shape.

Checked it out to today, is a 10 bolt with a corp 14 out rear. Running 4.11 and 38.5 tires and a sm 465 and a 205, any weak points I should concentrate on?

yup, the 10 bolt... my buddy had 38.5s on his 10 bolt, and broke it EVERY time he wheeled it. 4 trips and he decided it was time for a Dana 60.
