I'm needing to do up some pipes, and the local pipe benders all use the same crack dealer, becouse there prices are pretty much the same.

I remember some talk of a kit being offered just like the LMC one, but with no mufflers. Anyone able to direct me to that?

Also, where exactly to the tail pipes come out? Picas would be cool.

Also, I have a leaf spring 2 wheel drive, would I be better off with the 4X4 kit, or is the 2 wheel drive kit OK?

JC Whitney has the same kit made by the same people, but without the mufflers. You can get then to exit behind the tire, or straight out back. Don't know if you remember when I first finished the 68, but I had an LMC turbo kit on it. Fit perfect, and the turbos actually sounded REAAAAALY good! Can't remember if they offered a 4x4 specific kit or not though......

hooker makes a 4x4 kit you can get it thru summit for rite around 135 bucks but the surface rust will come quick with either of these kits try to treat them with something be fore you install , the kit does not come with mufflers , i did try those turbo mufflers out i didnt like them , just my opinion . oh and you can get side exit or out thru the rear

I've let the old kit for the 68 set outside for about a year and a half and the only thing that had any rust was the welds that I didn't paint over. The aluminized pipe holds up real well.

The 4x4 kit has nothing to do with the rear leaf springs verses coils. It has everything to do with the center, straight down factory exhaust manifold on the 4x4 verses the angled back ones on the 2wd.

I bought the 4x4 kit for my 4x4. The only thing that wasn't in the kit was a hanger for the side of my truck that didn't come with a hanger. Single exhaust trucks only had a hanger on one side. You can get a factory hanger for the other side if you are putting together a 100 point restoration. Otherwise I'd get a generic one at NAPA like I did.

Why buy the kit without mufflers?

I didn't have the rear tank at the time, but they cross under the frame just behind the axle, and will provide room for the tank.

These are the best pics I have of where it exits and how it looks with a rear mounted tank. Don't buy autozone tips, they rust too

They are "flappin in the breeze" in a few pics 'cause the crossmember that I had them mounted to under the bed was removed for the tank

There is plenty of room around the tank, but it sure is tight around the driveshaft with a coil rear, but who knows without instructions I may have installed the whole kit wrong

I did try lots of configurations with the pipes/mufflers, and this was the only configuartion I could get to "fit" into each other

Longhornman, the pipes rusted on my truck pretty quick. It is humid in SC, but I'm sure winter salt (or whatever they use now) would kill these pipes in a couple years without a good coating on them up in Ohio. I also think the kit would work much better with the leaf rear as opposed to a coil rear because you don't have to squeeze the dang pipes between the driveshaft and trailing arms.

theres no way they would fit with my 40 gal. tank and skid plate. mt skid plate is only 1.5" back from pumpkin cover but i have plenty of room for the pipe if custom bent. now to find some corvette ramhorns. seen some last week but they were porly repaired. wishing now i bougt them and repaired them corectly

OK, as few of the questions you guys have asked me...
Pipe shop prices go from one ezxtreem to the other. I asked 3 local shops for pipes from the manifolds to under the cab, nothing special, 2 1/4 mild asteel pipeas, told them I have a caddy 500, with new bolts in the manifolds, all the 'hard work' has been done, (rusty bolts removed, tapped and new bolts in place, they quoted me 100 bucks per side, that's 6 foot of pipe, and 12 bends. They all quoted me about the same price.
The part that sucks, I'm still at there mercey becouse I need them to link the caddy manifolds to the chevy pipes.

I want a kit with no mufflers, becouse I have 3 month old muffers under there and I like the way they sound.

Thanks for the 4X4 verses 12 wheel drive info. THAT is the type of info I am looking for.

You just have to keep looking. I called a muffler shop in Memphis and they were the smoking the crack. They wanted $650.00 to put 3" pipes and mufflers on my 70 chevy. At first I thought the young lady was making up prices as we spoke. I then asked her how much for 2.5" exhaust system, she said $575.00.

I have found another shop to do the same 3"exhaust for $325.00.

Andy, I did mine myself for $175 in parts... 1 U-bend, 1 J-bend, 4 pieces of 4' x 2.5" pipe, 6 hangers, and two $36 mufflers from Summit. Not "American Hotrod" quality, but they were cheaper than the muff shop! Of course though, the easy access was worth a small fortune!

Thanks for the pic. My brother payed $400 for a system on his 68 and it dumps out in front of the rears, and it is hanging completely below the frame!!BS!

Andy - When I installed that kit, I used the clamps to get everything in place where I wanted everything, then went back and fully welded everything. Of course, I have two miles of kinda rough gravel roads to travel, so I went ahead and welded it so nothing would rattle out of position.

Up here, after the first winter, they'll be as good as welded from the road salt and brine.
However, I'll ask the pipe shop what they'll charge to go ahead and weld them up. I have no issues leaving it just clamped if the fit is good. (plenty of slip fit on factory stuff that holds up for 100k)

I'm hookin up to manifolds, not headers, however, I have a caddillac 500 cid big block under my hood, so it isn't going to be a nuts and bolts deal, I'm still gonna have to see the muffler shop

it won't bolt right up, but you can do like I am and just chop off 2 or 3 feet off the front, and then drive it un corked to the pipe shop.
