Dual Exhaust Photos
Hey, I'm trying to get some ideas for duals on my 79. I'm not sure if I want to look for a double-hump crossmember or not and I'd like to see some dual exhaust photos with and without; if anyone has them.

I'm not sure what you're referring to with the crossmember, but hope this helps. This exhaust was on this truck when I got it back in the winter.The headers were laying in the back when I got it, b/c it had no engine, trans, etc. I put 'em back on when I stuck my 350 in. Took these when I was thinking about ebaying it away a couple weeks or so ago.

heres after one was mounted...
both...had my driveshaft out, hence the bag. and yes i was leaking pretty bad...cleaned that up too |

yes, yes, and LOUD. they were actually pretty clean sounding, not the obnoxious open headers kind of loud. the packs muffled them a bit and made it sound smooth

Good setup for a street truck, but way too low for anything that goes out in the dirt... Still like it tho, clean and simple.

Wow, thanks for the PICs you guys! That tells me a lot! My crossmember looks like dubdeuce's. Are there any other types of crossmembers that were used on the 73-87s?
So here I am screwing around about the duals & headers and this morning my tailpipe decides to drop off. The muffler looked like it was ready to take the plunge next. With a looming state inspection soon, I picked up a stock tail pipe; an El Cheapo Raptor turbo muffler; extra pipe & hardware after work so the ol' gal will pass inspection. I just finished the install and I was astonished about how restrictive the original cat is; it's almost as quiet as a muffler. It's one of those big ugly flat looking things. I started the truck after cutting the stock muffler off and I'm sure that I could have driven it to work without attracting the attention of the police. THAT thing has GOT to come OFF! The turbo muffler sounds nearly stock with the stock converter. Tomorrow I'll find out if the turbo muffler made a difference in performance. There's a mile long steep grade on the way home from work and my whimpy 305 2bbl (265,000 miles on it!) labors to achieve a blistering 45 mph up the hill even with 3:73 gears; pisses me off when the FEDEX truck passes me going up the hill every day. In a few weeks the ol' gal won't be laboring up that hill anymore as I'm freshening up a 406 for a swap. This weekend we're s'posed to have nice weather, so I'll try to get some PICs of this work in progress ... and hopefully not scare anyone away! Thanks again for the PICs! |

I take it as you're running manifolds, and not actual headers? Those will make it sound like you say, open headers are just a pain in the ass - I ran my truck with just headers and turndowns and it was alright, I ran it with open headers and the maintenance crews at school nicknamed it "the Sherman tank" lol

Here's my new exhaust, finally got tired of blowing my eardrums when shifting at 3500rpms:
Consists of two long-tube headers, two 18"-long S-bent Headman header Extensions, two 18"-long straight exhaust tubing pieces, two cheap Super Turbo mufflers, one 18"-long straight exhaust tubing piece cut in half and an angle to form the slanted "tips", six heavy-duty clamps, and two heavy-duty US-made hangers. Exhaust is 2.5" diameter all the way, and cost me right about $100 grand total. And yes it's a very close call on the passenger side over the tranny crossmember, and yes both pipes run right about an inch under the floorboards, so no I don't really need a heater with that setup, and yes I love the way it fits and sounds

Here is a shot of dual's out in front the rear tires. The pictures are not to good, but they can help a little bit. I believe they are 2 1/4" from the headers into glasspacks.

Do thoose header buddies require you to cut your exsisting header flange off of the header itself and weld thoose on? or do you only have to cut your pipe/reducer off and weld that on your pipe then it fits up to the back of the standard flange headers?
I know the ball and socket deals you have to cut the headers and the lead pipe and put thoose on. Looks like you only have to do the pipes on that setup and not the headers.

Nacho, I wish I could keep my undercarriage that clean! My 71 had a similar setup .. I miss that growling exhaust. Anyone know how many different crossmembers were available on the 2wd 73-87s? ~ Dave |
