I only used the existing rag joint when I did mine. I did not have to add anything.

is there anything wrong with using the ra joint, like strength issues? why is there a rag joint in the first place?

If I remember correctly, the van shaft is longer not shorter than the truck. This makes it necessary to shorten the intermediate shaft.

I think typically the rag joint is right at the steering sector. I have seen those other joints, but don't know what they are called. I think the rag joints are for minor imperfections in column alignment and to absorb road vibration. I know they are spendy. I put a new one in from Borgeson along with other steering components, and just the rag joint was about $70.

It is not a rag joint. It is more like a universal joint but it is standard issue. Those intermediate shafts with that universal type joint in it did not show up until '69, I think. 67-68 had a one piece shaft that went from the steering wheel all the way down to the rag joint on the steering box. Is that what you are dealing with?

There is an intermediate shaft that you are looking for to make up the differnce in length and they have a u-joint built in. Around here, they typically run $80+. I bought a tilt and thought that it was way too short, but most won't tell you that there is an intermediate shaft that has to be used and most people don't sell them with the column.

Here is a pic of my intermediate shaft that goes from the end of the steering column to the steering box. I have a straight red line pointing to the rag joint.
