Speaker hole- less dash

I have a Blazer dash with no speaker grille has anyone else seen one? It is supposed to be from an early vintage and it would be from a Blazer which came factory without a top so the speaker was mounted under the dash.

Re: Speaker hole- less dash

The speaker was mounted below the dash on the Blazers not in the top like the trucks. At least that is where mine was and all others I have seen.

Re: Speaker hole- less dash

My blazer came with a double wall top and had a below the dash mounted single speaker. No holes in the top of the dash. IIRC all blazers came with this dash. Anyone?

Re: Speaker hole- less dash

My guess on why you have seen a few blazers with truck speaker holes is they are actually truck windshield/cowls. In doing a alot of research on my 69 camaro I found in books where GM line workers were interviewed. They said when cars/trucks came down the line if they were out of parts if a suitable part was available they went with it and didn't shut the line down.

Re: Speaker hole- less dash

I have gone through a few of these bodies for parts, etc. I looked through some of my pics and found:

72 Chevy CST 2wd blazer - no dash speaker
72 GMC K5 (black one) - has dash speaker hole, It's hanging on my garage wall at the moment.
71 Chevy K5 - no dash speaker hole
71 Chevy K5 (yellow one) - no dash speaker hole
I also had a green 72 GMC K5 but I can't find a single picture that showed the top of the dash. I even had it cut out to sell to a guy and those pics are gone. I just can't remember what it had.

BTW, not a single one of them had the original speaker installed from the factory, either above or below the dash. Also, none were AC dashes, if that matters.

Re: Speaker hole- less dash

I have no idea the rhyme or reason behind it but I know a 72 Blazer could have been either/or on the dash speaker. I have often wondered if AM/FM setups got the in-dash speaker and AM only got the underdash??? Just a thought...

Re: Speaker hole- less dash

On my 72 CST w/air I had no speaker holes on the top of the dash. Once I got the truck aftermarket stuff was installed, but I did find the original speaker mounted as if there was a speaker grill on the dash. I have no clue what it might have sounded like.

The one I had with a dash grill was AM radio.

Re: Speaker hole- less dash

My original '71 Jimmy had the speaker under the dash, no speaker hole on top. My Wyoming truck that I am building now was/is a '72 with the speaker hole, but no sign of speaker or radio when I got it.

Re: Speaker hole- less dash

Just wondering out loud here, the trucks were built at like 5 plants or something like that. Was it the same for blazers and suburbans? There were only a few blazers built compared to trucks, so maybe they were all built in one place, I don't know, just saying. Maybe it made a difference which plant it came from.

Re: Speaker hole- less dash

The blazer was GM answer to the jeep thus no tops when they first came out. No speaker in the top so it wouldn't catch water. One true way to tell is there is supposed to be extra metal in the corners I believe of a blazer windshield frame. If you see a blazer that is junked with speaker up top cut it up and look for the extra supports. As i said earlier I am basing my theory that they are truck windshield and cowls on my camaro research. I bought a 69 RS/SS in 1990 before everyone was cloning I bought the car from a older man who had the car documented as Original matching number. I get it home look at the casing on the block it is different than the 3 camaros listed. I freak listing say Nova/chevelle. Couldn't find much on the block. Have it checked vin is on the block. Do more research talk to camaro experts. Find book chevrolet by the numbers. Lists my block as 6 known to have been put in camaro during the build period of a month. My casing is within that month etc. Read the interviews from GM line workers who said we would grab a comperable block, part etc to keep the line moving. Since there are very few in the top of the dash. I have seen hundreds of blazers and I have only seen one or two that were up top,.there appears to be no real reason like AM/FM got speaker up top or CST etc. You would be talking about a limited number of dashes that would be individually made. Blazer frame truck top with speaker hole. Other wise they would have made them all that way.

Re: Speaker hole- less dash

My '72 CST has the speaker in the top of the dash. It's still there. Mine has an AM radio and A/C. It's original and unmolested so I know it's correct. Don't know why there are differences.

Re: Speaker hole- less dash

Pound 41 has the most likely theory, [also backed by my friends grandmother who spent 36 yrs on the line] I have seen Blazers/Jimmys with and without speaker holes in the dash and no rhyme or reason as to options. As for keeping the assembly line moving this would be more important than making all vehicles the same. My '72 Cheyenne has black interior listed on SPID, but the door panels are green dyed black. I will say these are original panels for the truck because I am fairly certain the pass. side had never been removed before I got the truck. Having parted countless GM cars and trucks and restored a few I have seen similar situations.

Re: Speaker hole- less dash

Yes very true with motors. My camaro block was a casting for chevelles and novas. They ran short on SS350 blocks went over to the SS Nova/Chevelle line got the blocks they needed to finish. Made notes in their longs and out the door my camaro went.

Re: Speaker hole- less dash

The speakers were made by Rolo Jensen - either in Punxsutawney PA or more likely in Dubois PA - because they had a much larger production line at that time.

My '67 Panel truck had a speaker grill on top of the dash - but no radio.
My '71 CST Blazer had one of those hang down speakers.

The radio took an act of congress to get out and weighed about 20 lbs.
Many a heater control got broke when people tried to take them out from the bottom.

I believe that you had to take the cardboard glove box out to get to the radio.
