they didn't mention that in the hamb post, but I did a quick google search for "vw bumper guards" , and came up with 67 and earlier euro style.

If it was me, I'd go with 65gmc930's idea with '61 inserts. But definately not the 4-5-6 grille. they don't look right on anything but 4-5-6's IMO.

Love the 60-1 hood, Id use the GMC grill and put yellow headlights in it, I think that would look cool. Wonder what a 62 chevy grill would look with a 60-1 hood?
