Re: Doing alot of upgrades

I'm not understanding why you would change a timing chain or why it would even need to be replaced on a motor that looks that clean.

I'm sorry, I guess I failed to mention why I'm doing this at the start of this thread. I got this truck and it ran a little weak but had great oil pressure and ran very cool, didn't smoke or anything. I got it home and the next morning I said to myself, this thing should have more power than what it does so after I fixed a few leaks I played with the motor. The P/O had the time to low, the plugs were burning pretty good but the gap was way off, the valves were to tight and the quadrajet was right on, very nice. Any case, after I went over the truck, got it running healthy I just wanted it my way and I started playing with it and I thought some of our members would enjoy seeing some of the my way changes and one of them is I like the throttle response and the sound of an aftermarket cam. I also like to hear my motors running free, healthy, and feel like they are happy. So, that in a nutshell is why I'm doing what I'm doing because I love it. I know the cam & lifters, timing chain & gear are like new and I thank the lord for blessing me with a good motor like this and someone will get some good use out of this stock setup if that's what they like as I would in no way throw these away or nor would I let them lay out in the weather and ruin. I hope this makes sense.

Re: Doing alot of upgrades

Hey fellers and gals, I finally got a chance to have some fun on my truck. Between helping a friend setup his rearend gear and doctors appointments and being down in my back I have managed to make a little progress. I got all the old gaskets cleaned up, cleaned the motor up a little bit, washed my Lunati cam down and dried then lubed her up good and slid her in. If the good Lords willing I am going to set my cam up Monday (Set her about 4 Degrees Adv) and if my body will hold up I plan on putting the lifters, push rods in & roller rockers on and adjusting the valves then button the front cover up. Anyway, here are a few pictures of where I'm at right now.Name: motor.jpg

Re: Doing alot of upgrades

Hey fellers, it seems like it has been a month since I got to play around with my truck as I've had that flu bug going around and haven't felt like doing much of anything. I did get to play some today though. Here is where I'm at right now. I'm waiting on a couple of parts from Summit and I should be ready to break the cam in. I didn't think that big block was so wide until I put the tall valve covers on. The right side fit good but the left was a little tight. Other than that everything went together pretty good. I hope that I'm going to be able to use my old Team G but the shortest adapter I could get was 1.75 so you add the carb & breather to that and hood clearence is getting close. If I was not going for looks so much I would run a dual plane intake but I like that tall look and a Dominator carb is too much for street driving. Anyway, here are a few pictures Name: new valve covers.jpg

Looking good! Keep up the good work. I would consider trading out that glass fuel filter for a plastic/metal one though. They look nice but can be disastrous if they break...

Thank you. Yep you're right. I am changing it when I plumb my supply line in. I've heard bad things too.

One thing I would consider getting rid of is that glass fuel filter. I've heard too many horror stories of those breaking and causing major fire to your engine bay and entire truck.

Other than that it looks great!

Keep us updated!

Re: Doing alot of upgrades

Hey guys & gals, I got to play some more today. I got my brake booster assembly put on and while I was bleeding the brakes I noticed the new transmission pan gasket was seaping a little again so I played around with it and changed pans and so far so good. I also ran a new braided modulator line that my Dad gave me from his dishwasher install. It is actually a water line but I figured it would work fine for a nice looking vaccum line. I got my speedometer cable hooked up and tweaked a little on my column shift linkage then my adapter came in from Summit and I got my carb sitting on there before my body gave out. The hood clearence was very close with my short breather on, 1/2 inch, lol. Hopefully I can plumb her in and break the cam in tomorrow or Thursday and yep the glass filter is getting swapped for a metal chrome or plastic see thru one. I've got both but don't know which one I will use yet. Heres the pictures from todayName: new booster on.jpg

On my brake booster and steering column I'm using some paint they mixed to match the paint on the outside of my truck. It's called Specmaster Blue. On the motor it's just a medium blue engine paint they have at my Hot Rod store. I've only found one place that will mix acrilic enamel & put it in a rattle can. I thought it was pretty cool. I just took my ashtray and a flake from behind my door panel in & they matched it up. At least now I have the paint number for when I have it repainted completely.

My motor was haveing to run to rich with that Team G intake with the 2" Dominator adapter I had to use so I had to go with a low rise dual plane intake but she's ready. I could have ran the other intake but it would have disrespected the people behind me in traffic. It would burn your eyes it was so rich and when I leaned it out the most I could it still burned your eyes and also had a real bad stumble. I tried running my timing up but my motor would run a little on the warm side so I just took it off but when I get a different set of heads it will go back on, lol. Let me know about the Rod Runs and also Hart_Rod has a super deal on a radiator on here for our trucks.

Re: Doing alot of upgrades

WOW, it's been awhile!! Well, here is the engine after I made the changes. I have done some front end work and a little interior work but mostly just enjoying driving it. Anyway, I had to change intakes out and go with a dual plane and also had to put a fuel regulator on it. Here are the pictures of the engine and I will try to get the pictures of the other work posted later tonight.
