60-66 factory Automatic column shift column

Who has a column shift automatic column? what parts are all in it? do you have an aftermarket or different wheel on it?

I got a shell and now I am wondering if it is worth it to rebuild. I saw the 71-72 factory tilt that CPP has for like $280.00 but I dont care about tilt really. I like how the factory one bolts up and looks.

Re: 60-66 factory Automatic column shift column

Auto columns are pretty rare. I'd like to find one for my 64 C10, but no luck so far. Apparently 95% of these trucks were 3-speed manual transmissions.

Re: 60-66 factory Automatic column shift column

61, what wheel do you have on it? I have tried to contact some rebuilders but obviously they are too busy to speak with someone who has money in their hands.

I just need to know the parts. I have a 64-66 assembly manual but it is pretty worthless for that.

Re: 60-66 factory Automatic column shift column

cool 61, Thanks.

I dont want to buy one, just need the parts run down so I can get them. This column is in perfect shape, very little damage but just need the parts inside.

Re: 60-66 factory Automatic column shift column

what are you really after. do you want someone to take theirs apart, so that you can see all the pieces. I doubt that anyone is going to do that
I have a complete 62 a/t( minus h/ring) and a 65 a/t column. I can take a picture of it assembled for you
aerotruk may have an exploded view of a str column

Re: 60-66 factory Automatic column shift column

No, No, I wouldnt want anyone to take theirs apart, just looking for what parts all go in it. I dont trust the parts houses to give a complete listing of needed parts is why i am asking. A pic of yours would be great, any detail such as pic of the column without a wheel on it would be good too, an exploded view would be fantastic.

I want to get the parts 1 time and not go back and forth buying 1 part, then need another and so on like I have done before.

Here is a breakdown from LMC on the top end of the column. It may help.

It helps, I just hate LMC, nothing is ever in stoc and they stick it to you on shipping and "handling" I hate it.

IMO that is all they are good for, I see they "say" the parts are in stock...but we all know different. I generally have used Classic parts ( formerly CHevy Duty) for over 20 years, but now I try real hard to use the forum members.

Re: 60-66 factory Automatic column shift column

my '65 c10 has a '71 chevy c10 non tilt automatic column in it

look at the various interior shots... it was in there when I bought it.

Van Pershing's 1966 C20 - he used a steering column and steering box from a 1983 suburban

Just a few options for you.

Have fun.

Re: 60-66 factory Automatic column shift column

I have a tilt from a 78 ( I think) but I just like the stock column look and fit. I know, I know, my truck is anything but stock, but some dont know that!

Re: 60-66 factory Automatic column shift column

I believe that 67-72 columns are pretty close to the same. You could swap the internals from one of those, since they are easier to find. I know they have hazard flashers and a different plug for the wires, but nothing that can't be made to work.

Re: 60-66 factory Automatic column shift column

they are sort of, the internals dont fit unless you put the 67 collar on it which that will take some doing. the shafts are different too. I dont know, I think I may table this change for a little while.

Re: 60-66 factory Automatic column shift column

I have a automatic column in my 62 but I don't know what year it is from It bolts in correctly but the turning indicator seems wrong. It has a wheal from CPP on it and there are photos of it inside my truck in my photo album. But there not vary good at showing the column.

Re: 60-66 factory Automatic column shift column

here are some pics of columns. 62 deluxe a/t, 65 or 66 for the rest, deluxe a/t, a deluxe 3spd and a std for a 4spd. not much difference except for shifter mechanism

Re: 60-66 factory Automatic column shift column

you will be best off finding a complete 3 on the tree column. and making the converting it to a "factory" auto column.

there are a lot of part suppliers that carry said conversion kits. although you might have the outside shell of an original column, youll never fnd all the parts you need to complete it. sorry, just my opinion. heres a small list off the top of my head youll need to complete your auto column:

*neutral safety switch (available after market)
*steering shaft (connects steering wheel to steering box)

*internal shifting tube (goes inside your column shell, then your steering shaft goes inside of it. this part is unique to auto columns alone.)

*gear shifting linkage (connects to the shifting tube, then to the trucks frame, then to the automatic transmission. can be fabricated, some aftermarket places might have their own kits for this.)

*shift indicator, its housing, and the collar that it mounts onto. this is the same collar that the turn signal selector comes out of. (with some moderate fabrication you could make this from a 3 on the tree column.)

*wiring harness with turn signal assy' (available aftermarket)

*shift indicator light bulb, socket and wire. (fits into turnsignal assy' but impossible to find. woud need to be fabricated if used on is not found.)

*shifting arm and collar (arm available aftermarket, collar unavailable.)

im sure there is more, but this is all i care to think of at this moment. It would be a task to source all these parts. if you really like the factory auto, bite the bullet and buy a good used one. they come up for sale on ebay and craigslist fairly often, $175-$300 more less. well worth it IMO.

Re: 60-66 factory Automatic column shift column

Anyone ever heard of cutting and "bondoing" a column shift to convert to a floor shift? If so how well does it work, what should I look out for? I want a tilt steering column for my 61' but it seems all the junk yards here in my town have 3 on the tree columns, yeah "wa wa". Thanks
