Keep it or sell it? THat is the question.
I just bought my 66 C10 about 2 months ago. Its been a lot of fun working on it and found out some real cool things about it. Ive been driving it and whatnot and I will be purchasing a new wiring harness for it so i dont short anything out and blow up. Either way, selling it or keeping it a wiring harness is needed. On one hand I would like to find something different like a little shortbed to do a daly driver resto type on it and find a chevelle or something more muscle type. But its not everyday that you come across a 66 C10 Factory 327 custom cab in this good of shape. So im kind of torn on what to do...It is kind of a rare truck and i love it, but who knows. Anyone else been in this dilemma? haha

Re: Keep it or sell it? THat is the question.
keep it the other stuff is way too expensive (muscle cars that is) the truck stuff hasn't become insanely expensive yet, you know like anything that says chevelle or camero on it they want a fortune for and as for the newer shortbeds they want a ton of money for those as well. The 60's trucks haven't taken off completley yet but they are getting really popular so it won't be long and you will have a much sought after piece and there's nothing wrong with the long beds I wanted a shortie at first but have seen the light lol.

Yup, keep it. It's worth a wiring harness for sure. As they said it's only going to get more valuable with time.

Re: Keep it or sell it? THat is the question.
I say keep it. I end up selling off projects after I finish them (or when I am damn close) only to regret it later. If I wouldn't have sold my '69, it would be long done by now. But then what would I do with all my free time?

Re: Keep it or sell it? THat is the question.
My advice is to take some time, sit down and imagine someone dropped $10,000 in your lap with specific instructions that it had to be spent on a vehicle. Would you put it into the truck you have, or buy something you like even better? No matter what you pick, it’s very easy to spend that much (or more) restoring a vintage vehicle.
For example, years ago I bought a 46 Ford 4 door sedan. Even though my dream car had been a 40 Ford coupe since I was about 10 years old, I always thought 46-48 Fords were pretty cool too. I plunged in immediately and within a year had installed a new engine, transmission, front suspension, wiring, interior, and applied a new coat of gloss black paint. I was very happy with the results. I had just gotten the 46 back on the road when I went to a swap meet and found a mint condition original 40 Ford coupe for sale, for less money than what I had already invested in the 46. I was heart sick. Since all my money was tied up in the 46 I had to pass on the 40 of my dreams, an opportunity that never came again. Don’t get me wrong, I think your truck is very cool. This is a forum of members (including me) that are enthusiasts for this type of vehicle, and if I had it I would want to keep it. But I have also owned a great many other very fun/cool/fast cars and enjoyed them as well. Just make sure this is what you really want while you are early in the investment stage. Also remember everyone knows about “seller’s remorse”. Far fewer people have anguished over “keeper’s remorse”. |

Re: Keep it or sell it? THat is the question.
(Sorry everybody, don't heart me) I would say sit on it for a while. I bought mine and have don a lot of work on it. But am still not fully in love with the body style. I love the 50's style truck more and in the back of my mind is the thought I should have waited until I found a 50's truck to work on.

Re: Keep it or sell it? THat is the question.
it's unanimous. Keep it. How often do you ever hear anyone say, "Yeah, I'm really really glad I sold that ol classic truck with the rare options..."?
Having dumped my pride n joy 57 bel air that i bought when I was 15 (many many moons ago with many paper route $$, kept for many many moons, and then sold many many moons ago), I can honestly say I wish I still had it. But I understand your dilemma - driver vs hot rod vs muscle car, etc. Sometimes it's hard to roll them all up into one vehicle, but I think it can be done tastefully and with enjoyment, or more appropriately, contentment. Here's my 2 cents and this is how I approach the hobby these days. I'd love to have multi-trucks/cars, etc - but my dilemma is that I move around way too much (oh yeah, and I can barely afford having one) but I like all those things you describe - driver/truck/hotrod/muscle car, etc - but when my 2nd dream car's price (62 Bel Air bubblehead) went thru the absolute roof, I'm talking in the $20K's-$40K's for a rust bucket with a small block and $100K+ for a restored 409/4speed -I got off that painful wagon. And I came back home to trucks, i.e. what I drive every single day, in fact what I've always driven every single day, even when I had that old 57. When it was in a million pieces on the garage floor (ok, my Dad's garage floor when I was 16) I was driving a 72 Cheyenne (rusted, but still...) Sooooo, long story short, I decided to roll it all into one vehicle - and I hunted til I found the 66 C10 I currently have. I want it to be a hot rod (granted I don't need it to do 10's in the quarter like I used to want to do with my 57) and I want it to handle well with some modern conveniences while still looking old or at least semi-original (i.e. the "engineering" of modern conveniences that DON'T seem apparent by looking is part of the fun for me - so whoever invented power windows that use the old window cranks, god bless 'em). Anyhoo - that's all I'm saying - I think it is possible to throw ALL you like about cars and trucks into a single vehicle, if you think it through and that's part of the challenge, that's what I like about it. Now, if I won the Lotto, I'm not kiddin you, the first thing that would happen is that the garage would get bigger and Blue Bessie would be gettin some stable mates - maybe even that 62 Bubbletop... but I'm not counting on it. On a limited budget (and I'm saying I am, not that you are) I think the most enjoyment for the buck can be had on a single vehicle. I've owned multiples in the past, and I never seemed to be able to do all I wanted to all of them and ended up a little frustrated with all/completely happy with none. That's my story and I'm stickin to it. Sounds like you're probably like the rest of us, you're a gearhead at heart. Wow, I've rambled on. That's enough touchy feely stuff for 2011. I'm gonna go eat some pork rhinds and watch some Oprah to cool down. (just kidding on the Oprah...) Abysinia, Jocko Last edited by jocko; 05-23-2011 at 09:40 PM. |

Re: Keep it or sell it? THat is the question.
If you sell it, you'll regret it - forever.
If you keep it you get to look at it out the window and grin. If you sell it and buy a SWB you'll just look like everyone else and that's never cool. Plus you'll rattle your back teeth out when you go over bumps. (LB FTW!) It's not my money, but my vote is to keep it and save yourself the heartache later. And there will be heartache later. That's a sweet rig. Have you seen some of the jalopies some of us bring home proudly? That sucker puts them to shame. You're a lucky guy to have that truck. Count your blessings. P.S. If you hit ENTER after each picture it doesn't break the forum by running off to the left like that. Last edited by FetchMeAPepsi; 05-25-2011 at 01:54 PM. |

Re: Keep it or sell it? THat is the question.
always remember you can have more fun with a truck than you can with a car, well, almost. anyway remember that if you sell your truck & then spend the money, then you won't have the truck or the money.

Re: Keep it or sell it? THat is the question.
9 times out of 10, when someone says they need a new wiring harnes, they don't really. Out of the last 3 trucks I've owned, the previous owners said they needed new wiring harnesses, because directionals wouldn't work, headlights not working, wipers, etc. If you take the time to diagnose the wiring, and are patient, you can usually fix the old one and you don't have to have your truck non functioning for a large project like harness replacment.
I've owned 25 or more old, and I mean unrestored $500 to $1000 cars, and never had to replace an entire harness before. The only car I felt like I needed to replace the harness on, but still didn't, was a 1940 Chevrolet I found in a barn in Nebraska. The wires were bare in places, and all original cloth covered. I drove that car for years like that, and would occasionally have the head lights blink or something, but never got around to replacing it. That was the worst case of wires I ever saw. And it just kept going. Find the electrical issue, and fix what you have, and stop sweating about perfection and just enjoy driving it.

Re: Keep it or sell it? THat is the question.
If your heart is set on a short wheelbase truck you should sell the lwb -or- cut it down to a short bed.
Like markeb01 previously stated, pouring money into a vehicle that isn't really the one you want will ultimately lead to dissapointment. John Last edited by lakeroadster; 05-27-2011 at 10:12 AM. |
