I'm looking at installing a Vintage Air unit. On their website, they say the same unit fits 60-72. From what I can tell, they use the existing heater controls.

I have none of any kind. And I don't see an option to buy the controls to add....
Everything that they show for the Sure-Fit kit is tailored for the 67-72 truck. I see nothing for the 60-66 truck controls.

What is everyone using in their trucks? And pics please if you have any.

not sure which year your truck is, but recommend take a peek at these places - they seem to be more stock control "user friendly". Don't get me wrong, VA makes some really nice stuff too - but, like you, I've scratched my head a little on the controls - and I kinda like what these places below offer. Anyway, just for your SA. Edit: Oops, just noticed yours is a '64 - maybe someone else can use the 60-63 links. Anyway, I like these two places (Old Air and Classic Auto Air because their kits are very year/cab-specific.

I went with the Gen IV unit from VA. My truck isn't done yet, but I've seen it in two other trucks - '72 and '65. Its a bit larger and you have to work a bit to get everything to fit but it looks good when done, and it blows like crazy. On mine, I installed the left and right vents on either end of the dash, and the center ones are mounted in the old control panels on either side of the radio. I actually welded plates in where the removable panels were. The electronic controls are going in the hole where the ash tray was. The Gen IV is all electronic so you don't have to worry about vacuum source. When it came time to get all of the hoses and fittings, their tech support (Mark) was great to work with, and he even sent me some pic's of his truck ('65) so I could how he installed his.

Here's a pic of the unit mounted under the dash. The bad part about the Gen IV is that is does hang down more than the surefit.

Tre - What year system did you use? I looked and they did not have a gen IV for my year truck...

Its not year-specific. You have to peice the parts together. I happened to run across a VA reseller that had done this a few times so he new what to order. I'll see if I can dig up the parts list and post it back.

I was looking at an "Old Air" unit myself as they seem to fit better and the controls look like the old factory ones.

I have a Vinatge Air kit "in progress" on my 65 Suburban. Prev owner installed it, I need to finish the wiring and plumbing piece. Best I can tell from the manuals, it's their 75065-kit for 64-66 Chevy Pick-up, with the Pro-Line control panels. I'll post some pics later.

Can you post a pic or describe how you had to cut the firewall opening to allow for the two heater and ac hoses to fit through? I have the same ac I am installing in my sons 64.

I have used Vintage Air in several builds. Their kits are complete and their customer service and tech support is top notch. I put a kit in a 71 and it fit nicely and was very cold.

I haven't done my 65 yet, however I have the inside unit that is a Vintage air and it was originally for a 34 or 37 Ford. It was free and unused from a close friend, so I will make it work.

A Gen II compact should tuck up nicely under the dash. I put one in my 47.

Here is a shot of the Compact II in a Model A:

In this photo you can see the supplied bulkhead fittings for the cooling hoses.

Dimensions are on Vintage Air's website so you can get an idea what you are dealing with. I have had such good luck with their products, I wouldn't even think of trying a different manufacturer. That Model A install is still blowing ice cold and the install is getting close to 10 years old.

If you call them, you can pick your condensor, get the compressor polished or not, and pick your vents and controls. No need for a sure fit kit, the custom ones can be fitted much nicer. After making your choices, they supply the rest of the kit, including hoses, fittings, crimper if needed, dryer, etc. No need to chase parts, just a couple cans of freon, gauges, and a vacuum pump......

towersddg, can you elaborate a little on how you installed the custom louvers - I like that approach and it's fairly inexpensive to do it (once I get past the mental block of choppin a hole in the dash for them). But I'm on my way considering a chopped a hole int he floor this morning for a shifter!

Just curious how easy (or not) the vents were to install. Looks great by the way.

Have an Old Air unit in mine, eight years old and still works good. One leak this summer but to be expected after this long.

Did a patch over the ash tray, used some exh pipe behind the vents they are 14 bucks each from nostalgic air, my kit came with the vents that attach to the bottom of the dash, and I wanted something different, here are some pics of the patch I did on the cowl, I'm close to paint maybe a week or so GM Torch Red, I will get some pics posted soon, Thanks Jocko

It would not hang down as far if the MSD box was moved....BTW the MSD box can cause interference with the A/C control...

Yes, I went with Old air product because of how original it looked. I also went original A/C vent on the dash. I cut the dash and made my own duct work to connect the hoses. I also closed up the holes on my firewall as well. Make for a clean look.

I got ride of my fresh air vents and closed them up separately then I installed kick panels in front with speakers. Going further, as I didn't need fresh air in the cab, I close in my cowl vent next to the hood and windshield.

Yes, I went with Old air product because of how original it looked. I also went original A/C vent on the dash. I cut the dash and made my own duct work to connect the hoses. I also closed up the holes on my firewall as well. Make for a clean look.
