Re: Frustrated ...
oh, don't get me wrong.. im extremely grateful for everyone's opinions.. I really do love this stuff.. research, questions, brainstorm , get hands dirty... thats why i have this truck.. i wouldn't dare go into a repair blindly... and i understand those guys may have made a mistake... i mean really its on warrenty and i could just take it back to them (30 min. drive) .. or i can try and figure it out myself... so i'm going to try and figure this one out ... really thanks, i do appreciate everyone's help.. and im sure we all know the frustration we can get from these wives ... i mean trucks of ours... Everyone have a grand Sunday.... and any more opinions or help is much appreciated... i know ill figure this thing.. out its just a matter of time.. thanks

Re: Frustrated ...
I am new to this site so I had not read your previous posts yet After reading all your other posts that was exactly what mine was doing before I replaced condensor. It would rev beautifully when not driving but the second it was under a load it all went to hell. Curious to see what it will be!

Re: Frustrated ...
Check the timing. Sounds like the timing is set to high, causing a hard start problem when the engine is hot and a early detonation problem/ping under load.

Re: Frustrated ...
sorry for the laxidazical response ....
Wish i had good news .. Today started fantastic.. Started right up this morning (after not wanting to start) last night. First drive with her was a short trip and she did everything i asked for. responsive on acceleration even when gears were shifting (save that thought) .. foot to the floor and she was smooth. Next trip the same.. (i was a happy feller then..) Then I went to the store .. and i take the long way.. She is still smokin' .. I'm having a blast with her. I literally go in the store and come out ( a matter of 10 min tops) .. and she was done for the day ... I have to ease into acceleration very slow and when it's about to shift to 2nd to 3rd (i think) ... she wants to blow.. cough pop snap.. so i lay off.. I can ease her up to about 45 mph but if hit the throttle she doesn't like it whatsoever.. It starts at about 30 mph, but i can ease into the throttle to get through ...So i let her sit .. and sit .. and now: i just got back from my daily walk from the gas station down the block and the truck isn't walking with me .. she's at the gas station.. would not start and ran like **** on the way there... I'm going to walk down there in a couple hours and see if she will start .. which means no sleep for me until my girl is home ... And that is a day in the life of 72tealnwhite nate

Re: Frustrated ...
I am remembering a time when I had a loose magnetic pickup in my POS HEI (before I threw it away and got MSD). At least I believe that was the part. It's the part below the rotor with "teeth". If this is loose the truck randomly runs like S*** because u get crazy spark scatter with the resulting UNWANTED advancing and retarding. Stick a screwdriver down there and gently make sure it's solid

Re: Frustrated ...
I hope you figure it iut... since it has been somewhat random I think the starting.... tick tick tick may be a different issue than the other described in your thread... I would start with the timing, spark gap, then checking the distri set up. there has been alot of good info given. I think you will get there. I have a similar issue on mine, just built too and mine loves the low end but once you get on it and it gets over 2500 rpm or so it starts to pop and sput and falls off but once you let of and get in her again seems ok... so I will be using the info in this thread to tackle mine.... I know my timing is set at 6, which may be too low and the spark plugs at 40. I do have to get a vacuum diagram and trace mine... after that will check the max fire system on the truck and dist.. then the magnesium in the shaft.... together lets figure these bad boys out... thanks and good luck teal let us know how it unfolds today

Re: Frustrated ...
sounds like your starter is gone now too. get a high torque mini starter so you don't have to ever mess with it again. First thing I always start with is a brand new battery.
The backfire and jugging sounds like timinig or maybe you crossed spark plug wires. Take the cap off the dizzy and make sure the rotor is ok and hitting all the contacts.

Re: Frustrated ...
well.. fella's ... The battery.. thank god not the starter.. but i'm due for a new one anyways... With the amount of information in this thread i think we can takle this one eventually.. I'm extremely grateful for the tips and advice that has been given.. I've been missing this site all along. As for "the ole' lady" ... Battery was dead..
She ran pretty good on the way back home.. Will take her out later. I'm going to make a phone call to the guys who put her together and ask alot of questions , i hope they are easy to deal with because they are about to get bombarded with questions... Here's the deal: i bought the truck blew the exh mani. My dad wanting to do me a favor lol.. (im 32 y.o.) took it to this place and went balls out on the fixing .. well i don't know exactly what they did.. (i need to know this info) they just talked to my dad ( i live about 40 min. away from the shop) ... so i'm pretty much in the dark as to what the timing is set at or what heads are on it, or anything else they did.. It's time to get this info. and see what i can do... Really though thank you all for the help .. This is what its all about .. helping others. and Duk... that is exactly what my truck does.. but only sometimes.. more often than running good tho. Hope to have more information later on today guys.. nate

Re: Frustrated ...
Having dealt with a similar issue for about 3 months starting back in December, my guess would be you have a bad ignition module. Your local auto parts store can test that for you for free. It is under the rotor bug on the distributor. My truck did the same thing, run good one day and run like a dog the next. Sometimes start, sometimes not. Having said that i also think your timing is advanced too far. If the starter seems to drag a little and turn real slow that is usaully the case. It may start fine when its cold but after it warms up it wont start as easy. Having read everything else everbody has said and you have tried i would start there. IF it aint that, it wasnt vacuum, then you have a fuel problem. Sounds like your carb may be loading up a little as well. What carb are you running on that truck?

Re: Frustrated ...
I had similar problem years ago. I could rev it up in park and everything was fine, but no power driving. While reving it up a friend heard a whistling noise coming from underneath. I had him look and every time i reved it up the exhaust pipe would slide back on the y pipe. Turned out to be an obstruction in the exhaust.

Re: Frustrated ...
I had another similar problem running a non vented gas cap on a tank that either didnt have a vent or it was clogged. About a minute after starting it would shut off. It would restart after about 30 minutes. I pulled the cap and could hear a slight swoosh of air. The rubber parts of the gas line were being sucked close. I dont think this is your problem, but something to remember for future reference

Re: Frustrated ...
i really think you should start with spark gap, timing, check the wiring for plugs, make sure it is correct. check vacuum lines and then if that still don't work check the ignition system, dist... if that won't work check the fuel issues and carb... by the time you do all of that your going to be smiling on how great she runs..... and as for me, i guess i should take my own advice and do the same...LOL wish us luck
