Just picked up a '99 Tahoe Sport

Just thought I'd share a few pics. I just picked this up yesterday afternoon. It's a '99 Tahoe Z71 Sport, w/ 126k miles on it. Strong 350, auto, and push button/auto 4wd and G80 rear axle. Pretty clean inside & out, other than all the dog hair I vacuumed out of it today. It's hard to find one of these that is still all stock in decent shape that hasn't had the p!$$ hammered out of it!

Anyway, I plan to do a few mods, mainly a Blackbear pcm tune, headers/exhaust (no cats) and a 2" lift with some new wheels & tires. I'll probably throw on some black euro headlights, park lamps and sidmarkers, along with some carbon fiber look taillights. Maybe some black step bars on the side, we will see what I can get away with, since I'm also eyeball deep in my frame-off '69 build too and I'm on thin ice with my wife as it is! I'll definitely take pics along the way.

Nice rig. I like the NBS 17s on there, but the tires are a little skimpy. What are you thinking for wheels and tires? I think these would look tough, if you're thinking 20s...

Obviously the wheels were on it when I got it, and the tires are almost brand new, so they will have stay on until they're worn out. I actually had those same Chevy 20's in mind if I went with a factory style wheel. I did put the black Liquid Metal 20's off my '05 GMC on the Tahoe, but the style wasn't quite right since the wheels have some machined accents along with being gloss black. I'll probably go with 18's or 20's in a semi gloss or flat black with some much more aggressive tires. I'll keep eveyone posted, thanks for the comments & suggestions guys!

Re: Just picked up a '99 Tahoe Sport

Here's a pic with the wheels off my GMC - it made this 'Hoe look pretty goofy, but I figured I'd share anyway. I really need to get a 2" block under the rear springs, that 'nose up' stance is killing me!

I usually don't like that style wheel very much, but I think they look good on there. And maybe it would benefit from new shocks in the rear?

Re: Just picked up a '99 Tahoe Sport

Shocks are fairly new Bilsteins, it looks to me like the bars up front have been cranked up, but I don't know for sure. From the ground to the fender lip is 37" in the front. In the rear, the springs looked okay and the shocks are good, but the same measurement in the rear is 35". I did some research and found out that the stock ride height is between 34-35" front and rear with stock tires, so the torsion bars being cranked up in the front jives with this.

I guess I'm lucky with the wife thing. My driveway looks like a parking lot and she just rolls her eyes at me sometimes, but she knows who she married and pretty much lets me do my thing.

Re: Just picked up a '99 Tahoe Sport

Oh, don't get me wrong, my wife is way cool, but she's also an accountant and I'm out of control sometimes when it comes to buying stuff for my trucks! I' ve gone way overboard and overbudget on my '69 and it's not even painted yet. This tahoe is my 'work' ride, so it really doesn't 'need' new wheels, exhaust, and a lift, but I sure do want them :-)

Wow!

Didn't know GM made the Tahoes in 2-door trim up to 1999 models. I really love those things. Being a Z71 guessing it is a 4x4 right?

In any case I am diggin' it!

Yep, push button 4x4, posi and 3.73's. It is the 'sport', hence the gray lower trim, bumpers, grille and red bowtie. The Sport sticker on the side b pillar is long gone, but I like it that way.

Re: Just picked up a '99 Tahoe Sport

A few updates - I went on a little shopping spree of sorts, got a K&N FIPK, an Accel Supertruck Tune Up Kit, SkyJacker 2" rear lift blocks, some black Westin step bars along with a set of Nifty 'Catch-All Extreme' floor mats. I got all that from Streetsideauto.com (my new favorite online vendor). I also ordered an HID headlight kit (eBay) and will be welding up some new pipes (had some 2.5" Flowtech Afterburner mufflers left from my '69) tomorrow. I got a set of exterior door handles from LMC (the stock ones are cracked) and put a new windshield in (the old one was leaking).

Here are some pics after I installed the lift blocks today - the stance looks MUCH better IMO, than the tail dragging look it had before. It's pretty much level all the way around. I did the tune up and K&N last night - you wouldn't believe how bad the plugs looked that came out. They were LONG overdue to be changed; I'm pretty sure they were the stock GM set. The distributor cap and rotor looked like hell too - there was green 'fur' all over the terminals inside. This thing runs so much better now. The step bars are still in the box in my garage, hopefully I can get them on tomorrow after I weld up my pipes.

I can tell you one thing, my '69 shortstep and my '05 GMC are going to get jealous since this new 'Hoe is getting all the attention right now

Re: Just picked up a '99 Tahoe Sport

Oh yeah, Pacesetter longtubes # 77-2262 are on my Summit Racing wishlist, lol. I'm gonna get them closer to the time when I get the tune done, because I'll be axing the converters when I install the headers. For the time being I did get my Flowtech Afterburner mufflers installed today, along with new 2.25" tailpipes. It previously had the factory muffler with some rotted out dual tailpipes. The Afterburners are a little quiet for my tastes, but they flow decent and sound better than what was on there before. I chose not to run any tips for now, since the shop I went to didn't have any black exhaust tips.

actually id rather have the exhaust like how you have it (hidden) then to have some tips hanging out. Sounds like the truck is loud not the exhaust.

whos doing your tune?>

Re: Just picked up a '99 Tahoe Sport

I have a Blackbear Performance tune (custom data log) on my '05 GMC, and I couldn't be happier with it. I have longtubes/duals on it with no converters and had the rear O2 sensors turned off with the tune and it's never thrown a code or SES light, so that's probably what I'll do again. Not to mention for just a few bolt on mods, my GMC crew cab will flat out get it.

I have seen some local guys advertising tuning services here in Little Rock, but I don't get out enough to hear any good or bad about any of the shops doing them. Plus they aren't any cheaper than Blackbear, so I'd rather go with someone I know.

Also, I bolted on the Westin step bars just before it got dark out. I like that they don't stick out much. Being black, they blend in pretty well.

Re: Just picked up a '99 Tahoe Sport

The Brown Santa (UPS) and the Red, White & Blue Santa (USPS) came by today and left some more goodies. Got a set of smooth ('88-94) outside door handles from LMC to replace the busted up stock 'textured' ('95-99) style door handles that were on the truck. The textured style handles look really cheap to me, plus the smooth ones are already black, so they look like they're paint matched. Also replaced the broken back door 'catch' that kept letting the door swing back and hit me in the butt everytime I tried to put anything in the back of the truck. Much better now. I can't believe how hard the side door handles fought me. I've replaced at least three sets of these in my time and the driver's side door tested my patience to the MAX!!! Passenger went in fine, but man I sure did want to take a sledge to that driver's side door latch assembly... Got it in the first time, opened it once, tested the lock, then the dang rod fell out of the catch on the handle when I shut the door. Of course the door is locked now, so I have to let the window down and open it with a coat hanger. Pulled it all back apart and finally got it all back in.

As for the grille, I got a free shipping coupon from Stylin' Trucks, so I went with something a little different and got the black powdercoated Speed Grille for the front. It will look much better when I get around to putting in some black/smoked euro style lights. I've already done enough damage for now, so it will be a little bit before I buy anything else for this 'Hoe. Time to take her to work and let her make me some money now!
