Straight Pipe vs. Muffler

thats my purpose for me getting cut outs on my truck is so I can still respect neighborhoods but when I'm actually out cruising headed to the track with my friends have it as loud as it can be.

Here's a shot of one setup I have. Before the electric cutouts were added, I simply had the mufflers turned down at the rearend. It would set off car alarms, was rather obnoxious. I added tailpipes and that toned it down considerably. Then the cutouts went on for noise at the flip of a switch.



Here's what I run on my wifes car. A simple Y-pipe into a single 4" system. It doesn't need cutouts to set off car alarms, it's obnoxiously loud even with that magnaflow on there. Currently doing a removable cone in the tailpipe to tame it down.

Yeah I would go for the electric cut outs but I've heard many many problems about the motor going out so I'm going to go with the get under the truck and take them off method lol but I love the set up hopefully I'll get mine looking like that but it'll be a tad bit shorter as I'm going to have my exit right after my gas tanks most likely.

Your wife's set up is pretty sweet too if you dont mind me asking what does she have?

I have another one here with the 'crawl under and take caps off" approach like you mentioned. I haven't had them off in about 12 years After a while you get tired of crawling under there and doing that.

When I went electric on this car it was the cats meow. I've owned that car for nearly 30 years, several engines and transmissions, lot of money spent over that time, and I can say without a doubt the electric cutouts were the best money spent Crack it open at the flip of a switch and scare the crap out of people, it's better than a horn You'll never go back to manual operation.

I've had them on there for about 6-7 years now without a hickup, they work great. Just stay away from the cheap ones.

Wifes car is a 2000 SS camaro she drives daily. She has a classic stashed away that she gets out once in a while, which is one I want to switch from an H to an X pipe system ironically enough.

Here is a shot of my ventura with a Pypes X-system. All stainless with a nice mellow sound. Over the last few years Pypes has become my new favorite system with good quality stainless systems, and perfect sound.

This is their transverse system with a single muffler in the rear (not visible in this pic I don't think).




And since I like Pypes so much now, I've installed their mufflers on pre-existing systems I already had in place to tame them down a bit, both of my trucks to be exact.

Here is the blazer with Pypes mufflers added to an old system I had bent up years ago. Notice the H-pipe with no room here to do an X.

About four years ago I had a V30 with a 454, headers and 2.5" straight pipes all the way to the rear. Because it was a crew cab and had twenty feet of exhaust pipe on each side, it was bearable, but I eventually threw some glass packs on it. I'm deaf enough and it was making me deafer.

yeah i want to salvage my hearing for now, there'll be plenty of time to lose it in the future no pun intend.

Uhhh... its a V8 not a tiny 4 banger... Theres no need for muffler. However the sound will be based on preference. The straight pipes will be louder, less refined and possibly have a tiny back crackle... But far as the dude telling you " you need mufflers for back pressure", make sure you don't take advice from that dude in the future.

I personally have 2 1/2 inch pipes, with some good old cherry bomb glass packs. Its loud, and I love it. But again goes back to preference. Also here in Florida, no emissions testing etc!!!!

well with my truck being 35 years old I don't have to worry about emissions either, yeah well like I told i believe its firebirdjones I'm going to get cut outs put on it so I'll have the mufflers if I want it quieter or can take off the cut outs and make it crazy loud, becaue the headers aren't the only thing that's going to be done to the truck, there's a list of things that are going to be done so I'm sure it'll just get louder as time goes on.

Had cut-outs on the Chevelle (454) and opened up you couldn't think it was so loud. What you could do, is just have a Y welded on during the system with a plate at the end to cover them. Summit sells the Y pipes (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-670136/). You could just get the pipes now and then get the electric cutouts later.

Yeah thats what I was planning on doing but when I get the system I'm going to have an x pipe so I'll need 2 of them to have on each side, but I don't know I'm a little undecided on whether I will or will not do the electric cut outs, I would like to but I don't know if I can justify myself in spending the money some of them want for electric cut outs.
